I still have my first car, an 86 Camaro, but I currently drive an 93 Grand Am.

I really like the car in that it's got really low milage and can get me 30 miles to college and then 25 miles to work on the week days. It's in excellent condition with only 45,000 miles on it. I really like the sound system I put in it too. I must have spent over $1500 on it so far. I have two Pioneer 6x9s, two Pioneer 6 and 1/2s, two Kenwood 5 and 1/4s, two Rockford Fosgate 12" subs with 400W powering them, one 12" MTX Blue Thunder with 200W powering it and I have another 200W powering the mids. Of course I had to use Dynamat to sound proof the whole thing, or else it sounds awful with the car body shaking. I'm getting close to 125db. With a little more tweaking, I should be able to get past 130db.

I drive a good ol 2 ton, 8 wheeler. Not sure of HP but I'm positive it's pretty high. No intake can match the monstrous sounds it make. The best thing about it is that I got a chaffeur. It's a real beauty and the chicks dig it like a child in a candy store. The downside is for some reason I have to pay 75 cents to ride it and it's made by MTA. What the f*ck is an MTA?

not too many computer types drive cool cars, what's up with that?! even fewer drive american cars. i have a '93 jeep cheroke country, a '88 cxr that i let my girlfriend roll around in, and a '88 mustang that was wrecked and i'm pulling a dr. frankenstein on it. i straightened the front end, put on a new fender, a maier cowl hood and springs to lower it an inch, koni reds all around, headers, sparco seats, 6 point roll cage, subframe connecters, 3 piece hayashi racing rims, 3.73 gears, hearst shifter, 6 liter catalitic converters so the flowmasters sound good and i stay street legal, and of course i'll do the stereo up so i can feel as comfortable on the way to work as i am finding the apex at an autocross. i think i'm the only one here that's guilty of spending as much time with my car as i do with my computer

Cool Vehilces?
American Vehicles?
Well as far as I can see in all my friends problems they aren't related to the Japanese parts !
I wish America would build a vehicle that would show the same type of long lasting endurance of their Japanese counterparts !
God knows I love the USA but I swear I can't even consider buying an american car !
Most of my friends who I used to ride with regulary rode Harleys and I swear I was always the one to go for help "on a Kawi" on our long rides.
I know that "New Harleys" are much more reliable than the older ones and I also know that they have a lot more Japanese components as well !
so before you judge a person for what's cool you should keep in mind that it's not that cool to be sitting on the side of the road when your friend on a "rice burner" is going to get help !

------------------
oops, another brain fart!

att

i wouldn't say that japanese cars aren't cool, especially since i have a crx and have had an accord, but i have just been noticing that there aren't many people who are interested in technology and american made pride like you would have seen in the past. i guess so much technology and related products originate from over-seas that our generation doesn't buy into that idea anymore. when you walk around our homes it's impossible to avoid foreign made products, and a sense of a global economy.

the neon is becoming one of the most modified cars lately, so dont laugh. neon's have incredible handling and a nice little amount of power for the price. if you ever go to an autocross or open track, you'll be surprised, they usually have separate classes just for neons because there are so many around now. they dont even have separate mustang or camaro classes at those events usually. did you really think mopar would sleep on the compact car aftermarket?

Love the commercials. http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/wink.gif

The VR6 engine is actually quite good. I've found the shifter to be a little sloppy though. Nothing a neuspeed shift kit can't cure (I assume you're going to get the manual?). Overall build quality is not bad, and the feeling on the suspension is definitely teutonic (I kind of like this). Maintenance isn't too hard, and isn't too expensive (if you don't do it yourself).

att
03-23-2000, 12:23 AM
re: the jetta...apex is right, the shifter is a little sloppy, and there are a few neuspeed upgrades, but none that will increase performance significantly for what you are going to spend. if you get the jetta be prepared to use it as a look good in it car.
btw it does great in sharp turns and/or u-turns with a little help from the ebrake. we had a little 180 contest between a 2000 neon and a 2000 jetta last weekend, and the jetta felt pretty under control the whole time(the neon kicked it's ass though)

Ok, now.
I want to know why my brother, SpeedRacer, is talking about MY car, and why he's taking MY car at 120. You notice he's not yet talked of his car. Either way.

Anyways, if anyone wants to have a shot at screwing up a BMW, go ahead and check if they're having driving courses. I took it last year for free. Its meant for people who have just recently received their licenses, but they have an adult course, which is the same thing with the added bonus of a sales pitch. Check the site if they even do it at all, and if it'll be near you.

I say estimated, because the speed-o-meter tops at 120mph... I had it pegged to where it took about 4 or 5 seconds to drop below the "top speed" when I let off the gas in gear.

last spring, my Bro. and I made the same trip in his '95 Nissan pickup, we were switching the driving between us, and we were both crusin' about 120+... scarry thing is, I only had my "learners" permit at the time. http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/smile.gif

I have to admit, were both speed freaks... http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

StarvingCollegeStudent,

I have a 99.5 VW Jetta GL.

I decided that the alu wheels looked good so I upcharged them knowing the dealer cost and the amount that they would let them go for ... but I digress.

Love my car but some observations that you may find interesting ...

(1) the warranty is pretty short
(2) the shifter throw is fairly long - but i'm used to it now.
(3) make sure that the dealer doesn't stick you with the Goodyear rubber. Insist on the Michelins that they've advertised the VW with.
(4) the upcharge is fairly steep for the VR6 option. You either have to get the GLS with VR6 option or get the GLX. Either way you are paying some 3-4K more or so. Amortized including taxes and interest on a 60 month loan and you are paying LOTS more. Be sure you can handle the outlay.
(5) having said (4) I really wish I splurged for the VR6. Believe me. I was upgrading from a Suzuki Sidekick 4dr with a 92 horse engine and the 4 cyl base Jetta engine was positively monstrous compared to my old Suzuki. But now, i'm wishing for more. Considering tuning up the Jetta now.
(6) significant body lean in corners. That's why you insist on the Michelins and consider lowering and upgrading suspension on your Jetta if you get one.

Other than all this ... I love my car. It would be a great car for impressing women ... but i'm married so forget about it!

But I would also look at the Civic SIR or Golf VR6.

Hope this helps.

bill_n_opus... Thanks for all the details, and my response was your first post (I feel special http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/smile.gif ) I don't think my car will stay stock for long anyways, completely new sound system, minor engine work, maybe some suspension, definately short shifter if I go stick. I was looking into the Golf GTi as well but i thought it was overpriced(24K for a hatchback?!?!?). Again thanks for your insight.

bill_n_opus
04-26-2000, 03:18 PM
Yah, 24k does seem high for a hatchback. Well, IMO, the Golf has a certain "lifestyle" component to it. If it can be said that the Jetta is more for "mature" VW fans and the Golf appeals more to the "younger" crowd. Just like a Jeep TJ appeals to a certain type of person. I personally like the shape of the Jetta and I prefer a sedan-type to a hatchback.

Good luck in whatever you do. Oh, give the TDI a serious look if diesel is easily available in your area. I understand that you get more torque with the TDI but not as much top end. That's a good tradeoff since you want more torque for everyday driving rather than an extra 10mph on the freeway when you are pushing illegal speeds anyways. That doesn't make much sense. The only problem is that modding a TDI may be problematic due to low production numbers of TDI's lowering the number of modding options you may have available.

Not to mention great gas mileage!

Just a thought.

Hey, thanks for the compliment.

I mean, I don't mind talking about cars and especially since I own a Jetta and I love it there's no problem talking about what a great car I have. A form of bragging I suppose. http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/smile.gif

Actually, I forgot another thing about the Jetta that slightly bothers me. The gearing for my GL, not the vr6 option, is relatively short IMO. Specifically 1st and 5th. 1st gear seems way too short although this is probably me. However, i'm darn sure that 5th should be taller. I'm buzzing on the highway at 120kph or, what, 70mph or so and i'm pushing 3k rpm which seems a bit high. Shifting from 4th to 5th seems to barely register a blip in the rpm range. I've been told that VW's rev better than your average car and actually "likes" the higher rpm. I don't know about that. Personal taste I guess.

But personal taste doesn't meant that it overrides common sense. Personally, I don't think that being in a higher rev range per se for a certain class of cars ie. VW's is "normal". If it feels like the engine is working too hard, then I think that the engine is working too hard.

Anyways, i'd love to be a car reviewer! That would be awesome! Driving around cars, kissing big car company's asses, having my pic in some editorial column in some car mag, taking out nice cars for long term testing to see if I could "live" with that car so I could tell the readership what I thought. Now, that's a dream job in itself. Adding the pay involved ... man, sign me up!

Spoiled brats, you want to hear about spoiled brats. Boy, when I went to high school (senior year 1993 - you know uphill both ways) I drove a 1980 Ford Fairmont - the demon of my life. That car stalled five times going and coming the 1.5 miles to school. If I didn't have the 2 backpacks (yes 2, I was a nerd) I would have rode my bike. On top of this, the car was silver with a black stripe. Can we say Raiders. This was especially fun when I got to drive near Compton on my way to my dad's work. Man, I could taste the bullets whizzing by. Back then the richest car a kid had was a new Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer Edition.

Last year when I went to see the campus I saw 24 Lexi, 2 Porsches, a few Audi and BMW, tons of MB and Acura. What in the world are 16 year old kids driving these for! If you want your kids to be safe in a reliable car you buy them a Camry or low end volvo, not a S class MB!!! It's sad when the teachers have cheaper cars than the students. And you wonder why education suffers in this country.

All I have to say is after I got rid of the Fairmont and UPGRADED to my Taurus stationwagon with power doorlocks and windows I was in heaven. Hey, the car felt nice, and a nice ride, and always got me where I wanted to go. Then when I got my first new car - my Contour SVT I'm just dying with ecstasy for a 20k car. I still have room for improvement.

What are these kids with 911 turbos and GS400s dreaming of when they grow up, F1s? Leerjets, owning an F-16?

Damn my posts are getting long! Sorry http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/frown.gif This should be in the off topic Rant/Rave.

Colossus: I know exactly what you mean. OK, so I didn't have to drive a FAIRMONT, but I went to a super-prissy all-boys private school, and good god, were there tons of ridiculous automobiles. My immediate circle of friends' car pool included (in 1996, mind you): a Jag E-type in near-mint, a couple of E-classes, a 1995 911 Turbo 3.6, and a handful of BMW's, only 325/8's and 5 series mind you. I drove a trooper and a tahoe, dream cars for the majority of teenage-dom, and I felt like a freaking pauper. I have the exact same question as you: what do you strive towards, materially? It's nigh ridiculous.
On the positive tip, though, between three of us, we could roll with 21 people (2 Suburban's and a tahoe), all safely belted in.

Then I'll answer that by revealing that it's an '85 944 whose only redeeming characteristics are it's 911-style rims and turbo-ready engine. Still, it's a steal for what I'm paying for it ($2000), and it'll be fun to fix up despite all the new tools I'm going to have to buy. It already screams - 160 hp on a < 2800 lb. car. I just hope I don't kill myself learning to drive it, considering the majority of my previous driving experience was on an '84 MB 300TD station wagon, an absolute tank of a car with the pick-up of an underpowered golf cart.

As you probably know they only made 3 T-top v8 cars that were the actual pace cars, so he put a t-top on one of ours and coppied the motor of the origonal ones as closely as he could. If you need any parts or anything for yours let me know and I will give you his email address. sorry - just now got back around to this thread...

Actually, I live in Stillwater - a college town (OSU) where we have not only the Sherrif's patrol units, but also city cops, Highway patrol, and university police. and lots of them.

Yes, My vehicles are registered with "OR" statmentes on the titles with the other "owner" being my mom on the car and new bike, and my dad on the original bike. The car is for "recreational" use, and Bike are just plain cheap to insure. No tickets on the insurance, no accidents. Good grades, student status.

And YES, I use the car for recreational purposes... when it rains, I go out to one of the larger smoothe cement parking lots at the lake (around 10:30pm - after all the people are gone) and do 180's and 360's. I also practice sliding the rear end exactly 90° to the right or left. I'm pretty good at it now, and even pull into fast food drive-throughs / parking spaces like that now :D

just line the front end up, slam the emergency brake, push in the clutch, jerk the wheel in the direction you want to turn, and right before you hit the 90° mark, let off on the emergency brake. The rear wheels regain traction (the car rolls forward about 3 inches) and you have a perfect lineup.

WARNING: Kids, don't try this at home! (especially not with your parents car!) :D

I have a very nice 1995 Contour SE V6, the works except tilt and sunroof (weird two things to not have, huh?) and a very sweet 1998 Yamaha YZF-600R Motorcycle. 90hp or so at the rear wheel, 450lbs or so with fuel, 3.1sec 0-60, 11.2sec quarter mile, amazing handling, awesome brakes.

Hey, no offense, BigBHaller, but I think the SportTrac is the ugliest vehicle since the "help-help-i'm-being-beaten-with-an-ugly-stick" M Coupe. And in white? Has Ford stopped even pretending that it goes offroad?

I don't mean to start any sh!t, just my opinion. Feel free to enunciate your undying hatred for my Porsche if you want to retaliate.

I'm very happy with my C320. I think it was a little bit pricey, but there's nothing like driving a Mercedes... even if it is their lowest line. Until the C230 coupe comes out... In which case, I'd say, "Buy a different car." I think it's the Mercedes equivalent of the 318ti (Yuck. I think hapoo would agree).
