My friend was on it. Before that he was on Weight Watchers. He lost about 45 pounds on the South Beach Diet. I'm opposed to Atkins, and only partially opposed to South Beach. I would choose South Beach over Atkins. Just an FYI, I was talking to a guy about dieting etc... he told me about this book and says its really good. Body For Life By Bill Phillips. There are a series of them not pertaining to just weight loss.

sigh...i'm not a big fan of diets but i gotta do something. i was in incredible shape (for me) about 15 months ago but i started a new job and just went to ****. i keep making up excuses for not eating correctly and not working out much. i go out and do crazy things like bike in moab or ride 280 miles in one weekend and it's pretty much a sufferfest the whole freakin' time. i'm tired of looking fat in pictures, of falling behind my friends on rides or hikes, and tired of people looking astonished when i tell them i just hiked or biked a long way. you? aren't you a little, uh, fat to do that?

we just went to glacier national park (pics forthecoming) and the pics weren't pretty. especially one where i was in my underwear. sigh....so i'm just looking for a decent diet that isn't stupid. the body for life requires a lot of planning b'cuz you have to have all those little meals. too much work imho. but i know 2 people that did it, lost a bunch of weight, and have kept it off for over 2 years. so i know it works.

Regular exercise, watch your diet. That's the best advice I can give you cheapie.

The problem with the specialized weight-loss diets is that the minute you get off the diet, most people can't maintain a well-balanced lifestyle and end up gaining back all the weight in a week.

Hey, most people wouldn't even take the first step of identifying such problems. I'm a fat bastard because I sit at my desk 100 hours a week and eat crappy lunches and have recently been skipping dinner. I know I'm unhealthy and I will be making amends in about...2 weeks.

I've been on weight watchers for about 6 months - I've done pretty well on it (40+ pounds lost so far) and have inspired some of my other coworkers to join our at-work program so that they will become less pear-shaped. My coworkers have done pretty well so far too. There are a couple ladies that have over 100 pounds to lose to get to their goal weight and they're about 50% there already.

My gf bought a South Beach book and has been following it fairly closely. So far she's lost about 13 lbs in about a month. She's also been hitting the gym and doing cardio a lot more as well.

Best of luck with your "eating modifications" and keep motivated! I don't really care for the term "diet", as it has a negative connotation that seems to imply that you are fat.

i don't know much about south beach diet, but i do know that generally speaking no "crash" diets work.

staying slim, fit, healthy is a lifestyle. it's not in a big jug of juice or steak with extra steak and bacon on the side for every meal.

that said, the body for life program is the shizzle. you don't really need the book though, the concept is simple enough to convey in 2 paragraphs. and cheapie, it really isn't that hard. the "meals" don't have to be anything compliicated** and in fact I found that it actually increased my available time, espically during work, because they're so fast to consume.

i did it by the book about 4 years ago and lost a ton of weight: i dropped from 210 to 180 in about 4 months and kept it off. now i've just incorporated that method of eating into my life. i've gained a few pounds a couple of times when i started slacking off on the gym and eating the traditional "3 squares" but whenever i go back to eating small meals throughout the day i loose that weight pretty easily.

**an example day (you eat meat, right?):

4 scrambled egg whites on a slice of whole wheat toast
cup of cottage cheese with a 1/2-3/4 cup of pineapple
grilled chicken breast with green beans & rice
bar (zone bar, kashi bar, balance bar, etc)
4-5 whole wheat crackers with peanut butter
grilled pork chop with spinach and carrots

you can make a lot of that stuff in advance or even buy it. grill up 5-6 chicken breasts and freeze them. buy green beans from the deil section of the grocery store. buy your pinapple in a can or , even better, freash but alreay cut up.

it takes about a week to adjust to eating smaller meals but after you do you'll not be hungry and will probably find you can't eat all that food in one day.

i'm starting it tomorrow. i'll try it for a couple weeks and see how it works.

bi, i coudn't figure which one to do. the body for life would be a good long-term plan because i need the carbs for my riding but since i already spent $15 on the south beach book, i want to try it.

on a side note, i'm kinda worried about my knee. i have had a lot of pain on the outside of my right knee. intense at times. i go to the doctor on wednesday to get it check out. i hope i won't need an mri or something expensive like that. i went on a little 6-8 mile ride tonight to see how my knee was doing. and the answer was a resonding bad bad bad. the problem is that the pain isn't dependant on effort. it hurts just as badly pedaling softly as when i'm hammering it. :bawl: i hope it heals in time to train for a race in november.

the longer you get it sit-the better it tastes! he also made merangue out of egg whites, splenda and a bit of cream of tartar-baked them up like cookies, and put the fillling in the middle..now THAT was something to taste!

lean lunch meat sandwiches made with lettuce instead of bread, chicken papillote (zuchinni, carrots, & terragon), broiled tomatoes with basil pesto, about 5 hardboiled eggs (blech), an omelet, stir fry in lettuce instead of rice, salad with tuna, cheese, sugar and fat free jello, pork strips, cottage cheese...stuff like that. there's not bacon cheeseburgers without bread in the south beach plan.

my knee....the doc tested my i-band, acl, and miniscus. he thinks those are fine but that the cartilage is damaged between my femur and the lower leg. it might have already been hurt and the fact that i didn't train much (read: at all) for the ride made it a lot worse that it would have otherwise been.

i have a physical in about a month or so and we'll look at it again. i'll have to find something other than running or biking.

he gave me an anti-inflamatory and tylenol with codiene. i feel like puking. i took two of them and it's made me pretty nauseous. gag.

My wife and I have been on this for about 9 months now. It isn't hard to maintain since phase 3 is basically just watching what you eat. Both of us have lost weight and kept it off, even with the occasional night out where we eat whatever we want. It's far from a crash diet, but the first stage is hard getting used to low carbs. However at the start of phase 2 you feel great and should have already lost some weight!

I firmly believe that you have to go into this thinking it is a lifestyle change and not a diet. My friends ask me what diet we are on and we now reply that we just eat better.

Read the book.. lots of good info. Some of the recipes are good, but there's better ones all over the net. It isn't hard to eat low carb (or good carb) foods and still eat well.

One of the few ways they are going to really see what is going on is through an MRI. They will be able to see what is going on with your articular cartilage or one of your meniscus pads (they are big shock absorbers in your knee between your femur and tibia).

What anti-inflamatories did he prescribe? I was given Daypro and it reduced my knee swelling dramatically to the point where I could use it again no problem.

Now that I've lost 40 pounds, I don't have any cartilage problems or knee swelling when I bike/run. On the advice of my doctor I also take Cosamin DS (http://www.cosamin.com), (he told me to take this formulation specifically) and that has helped me greatly.

I got a new recipe for ya Cheapie..
once you start phase two you can have fruits..my brother brought over some pretty tasty stuff tonight-kinda like jam, kinda like desert, kind alike the stuff you put over shortcake..
he took a pound of peaches, peeled, pitted and covered them with water and a box of SURE JELL (find it in the area where canning products are)..then he added 1/4 cup of splenda and boiled the hell out of it mashing up the peaches as he went along..after about 30 minutes of cooking time, he let the stuff sit out till it was almost cool, the covered it and put it in the fridge overnight..
he brought some over today..it was soo good, kinda like fresh peach jello, but not as gacky..you could really taste the peach, and a bowl of the stuff was actually nice..nice and sweet, no added sugar, not too many carbs (only one carb in the entire box of sure jell-which is just powdered fruit pectin)..and whatever the amount is in a peach..*you don't even eat a WHOLE PEACH* if you eat a bowl of this stuff..he tried it with strawberries and he said that was good too, I'd like to try it with some raspberries myself..anyway..try it and let me know how you like it.

still down about 10-11 pounds. i'm basically just eating normal food because i've been travelling the last week or so. i'm back on again today. if you don't plan ahead, you are kinda screwed in the food dept.

i should try that obby. i'm feeling pretty good being down just 10 pounds. i'm frustrated because i can't run or ride cuz of my knee. i hopped on an excercise bike in the hotel last week and went from zero pain to omg, i gotta stop in about 15 minutes. sigh...
