I'm not sure about proteges, but I have a Mazda MPV minivan that had troubles right from the start. I number of my family members and friends also have mazdas (mostly MPVs). My car has had steering wheel problems, alignment problems, intake problems the first 2-3 years we had it. And just last year, my transmission just died while I was driving it on the road. Same thing happen to a cousin of mine. I wouldn't recommend any Mazda. Their quality is very poor and their service is not up to par with other japanese manufacturers. Hope this helps, its late and I'm very drowsy right now. Sorry if this doesn't make sense.

i had an mx6 a couple years ago, and it was alright. i felt it was put together a little cheaply though. you might find the interior start to fall apart if it hasnt started to already.

Umm, ok that'd be pretty bad. Transmission just died? Hmm, i'll have to take a better look at the car.
