My first hurricane since I moved here 3 years ago. I was hoping to go to the Buc's/Bangels pre-season game on sat, but that might not be happening.

Should be interesting.

As someone who has lived here for 25 years, let me tell you this: it's just going to rain A LOT. And the winds are gonna be stronger than usual. You'll hardly feel it in Orlando.

When Andrew came barrelling through, that was pretty fierce, but generally we just get the minor hurricanes and tropical storms that level trailer parks.

Well, game is postponed till monday. The 'cane is heading almost directly for Orlando. We were told not to come into work at all.

Universal let us park our cars in the garage, had a friend take us there and drop us back off. This is going to be an interesting night.

My friend moved to Port Charlotte last year. I called him and he is very concerned about possible flooding there. I hope he makes it.

You should have them build it underground ;)

LegendKiller
08-13-2004, 09:49 AM
My fiance's parents live in Naples and it's really starting up there. Its going to hit somewhere south of Tampa at about 5pm. My aunt and uncle live in Sarasota (south of Tampa) and they evacuated a couple days ago, went up to Jacksonville I think.

Winds are up to 125 mph. It should go down some before it hits here, 60mi or so northeast of tampa, but its going right over orlando right now.

Jeb said that the evac might be bigger than the last big 'cane that hit mainland, 1.5m displaced, so they are projecting as many as 2m.

Chucles is a Cat4 now, news conference said there are going to be a lot of uprooted trees, tornados, flash floods, its going to peg Orlando directly.

Try to build underground and it becomes a pool...

A good chunk of Florida is below sea level... and the water table is very high.

I think they were originally all named after women but since hurricane Andy, they've been naming them after both men and women.

Charlie can be a girl's name. But it would have been better to name it Hurricane Chakah Kahn. :heh:

http://www.abcnews.go.com/sections/Business/US/hurricane_names_040726-1.html

The initial idea behind naming hurricanes came about in the 1950s as a means of streamlining an older system that used numeric latitude and longitude designations to identify storms. The new system was intended to ease communication issues with the clunky numeric names, and initially storms in the United States were given female names only.

.
.
.
The names were put into six alphabetical lists that alternate male and female names to prevent gender bias, and the lists were put into use on a rotating basis. Every six years a list is repeated, so the 2004 list of names, beginning with Alex and ending with Walter, will be used again in 2010.
.
.
.
Retiring Names

Hurricanes that cause extreme damage, like the $30 billion tally for Hurricane Andrew in 1992, have their names retired to prevent confusion in scientific literature and legal proceedings such as insurance claims. The country that feels the brunt of the damage can choose to retire the name. After hurricane Andrew ravaged the coast of south Florida in 1992, the name "Andrew" was retired and replaced by "Alex" for future name rotations.

21+ storms would be a true DISASTER.

Here is what they said...

In the average year, about 10 named storms will pop up within Region IV, leaving many of the names at the end of the alphabet unused. So will those names like Wilfred and Wanda ever make it into the rotation?

"Well, no one has accused of systematically discriminating against the last half of the alphabet, so I don't think the system is going to change," Lepore said. "It may not be a perfect system, but if it ain't broke, we're not going to fix it."

that quote only says what happens to unused names for that year. so what would the 22nd storm be called? would they dip into next year's rotation?

Traffic here is nuts. Everyone from out west is heading here, and the streets are packed.

I brought all my outdoor stuff (grill, bikes, etc) in the house, just in case, but I don't think we'll get a very big hit here. A few branches blown off trees, some minor flooding is my guess.

Couldn't find a single mention of it. Weird. Anyway, when i was looking through the sites, i came across this list (http://www.weather.com/encyclopedia/tropical/archive/atlantic.html) of names for hurricanes in 2004. It's not the same one as ABC's though. What gives?

I like DF's better, because G was for "Gaston", which gives us a decent chance at mocking the French-named hurricane as it turns away from land.

Really getting windy here, raining pretty hard. News is saying tornado's are all over the place. Their "tornados" here are nothing but whimpy little things though, not like the twisters up in the midwest.

once in a while the wind really picks up and it seems like the windows are going to break. The power browns out every once in a while.

I'll keep posting as long as I have power

Well, steph and I are alive. We got an interior closet ready and about 9 the wind really started going. There was a pine tree outside our window that started getting close, so instead of waiting for the window to break and glass to fly in, we went into the closet.

The power went out at about 9:20 until 5:30am. The tree is leaning up against the building (pics later).

Overall, it wasn't bad. But I have heard that in other places it is REALLY bad. There have been reports that Punta Gorda has been whiped out, over 400 people in trailers did not evacuate and some news reports are that there are bodies everywhere. Crazy stuff.

Well... if they had plenty of time to get out and STILL decided to ride it out in a freakin' trailer... well... they played Russian Roulette and lost on that one.

Everyone knows that you can't stay in your trailer/mobile home with a Category 3 storm bearing down on you... that's just suicide. :2far:
