View Full Version : Ouch, my poor little finger!
I was cleaning my house this morning and ripped the nail off my little finger. It's soaked 3 bandaids and won't stop bleeding. Does anyone have a good way of stopping bleeding? I have to go to work in a bit, and I don't want to be getting blood all over everything.

Hold your finger above your head, and apply direct pressure (press down) on top of the cut using your other hand. For a bad cut like a ripped fingernail, you'll want to hold it a couple minutes.

Be sure to elevate it above you heart... to slow the bleeding down some.
You may need to go get some gauze at this point... bandaids just ain't gonna cut it. Use the gauze and keep a little pressure on it and hope that it begins to clot. In the meantime, don't take any aspirin as this may thin the blood and hinder clotting.

Agree with above. Direct pressure with gauze. Keep it covered for a day or two. Apply anitbiotic ointment also (some have some local anesthetic in them, like Neosporin). If it gets inflamed, go to a local doc, as finger infections can be serious. Yikes...that really does sound painful!

That happened to me when i was younger, the entire nail on the index finger came off during gym. everyone was crowding around to see it. I think the nurse just wrapped it in gauze. I was flavor of the month then.
Thanks all, I finally got the bleeding to stop, but typing wasn't much fun at work today.
this thread is worthless without pictures!

:| So not even funny for me. I had cut my thumb on a cat food can feeding alley cats, went to the hospital and the nurse goes, "i'm sorry, but it's gonna have to come off." i started WAILING, as many 11-year-olds might do. she then proceeded to apologize and informed me i only needed stitches. i wonder how many other conditions she's complicated by giving patients heart attacks.

OH dear how did I miss this thread!
Holding your hand higher than your heart will help..that's correct.
and gauze will help as well-bandaids too-
but always keep a container of styptic powder (or a styptic pencil) at your house for non emergency bleeders (such as this)..
