View Full Version : moved: Anyone else tired of the Dell deals?

I've been a long time supporter of GotApex, and I've gotten some GREAT deals from this site. Unfortunatly, I'm starting to spend more time at other sites because I'm sick of seeing mediocre Dell Deals ALWAYS at the top of the list. I understand that GotApex gets alot of money from Dell links, I'm just sort of tired of seeing these craptastic deals overshadowing much better deals. Now a 400SC for $300, that deserves top billing... A stripped out 2400 for $399 doesn't. Perhaps it's just me, but I'm growin weary of this and my eyes have started wandering to other sites.. Anyone else in the same boat as me?

I come here for the specific purpose of finding out what the current best dell deals are.

uh....nope. i spend most of my time in the forums and i know where to go for the best deals. i rarely ever buy something just because it's a good deal and i'm glad apex is the place to find the cheapest computer for when i eventually break down and buy one.

Nope, I like those deals. People come to me asking what PC to buy and because most of them are the custom PC type, I know exactly what they should get. It's a lot better than them getting some crappy Compaq, Gateway, etc.

They might not be the best Dell deals ever, but some good deals come around once in a while.

They are great - when people ask me if I know where to find a good deal on a computer I just point them straight here. I know they aren't paying full price for a Dell and they're totally happy.

I refer a lot of people to come here when they buy a new computer. My co-worker bought one last month and got a better deal for the same price she saw somewhere else. I get tired of seeing the Dell deals also just because I read the Deal page daily and I have a working computer. However, when I do need a new or another computer then G|A is where I go to see how far my money can go. :) I do think he should point out that the 2400 doesn't come with AGP slot. Some people might not know that *cough* me *cough* and find transferring there AGP slot isn't compatible with the lower end models.

I do keep a lookout for notebook deals however since I'm getting tired of the space my desktop takes up.

Yup... it's just you.

If you wanna complain, then by all means... feel free to walk out the door. Please don't slam it on the way out. :nono:

Most of us LIKE the Dell deals... personally, I refer a BUNCH of folks to those deals... seeing as Dell makes a solid machine for a reasonable price. Many folks are VERY happy to see the savings on a brand that they can trust.

Too bad so sad that this just isn't catering to your personal needs. I'm sure that you'll find some other site (which it seems that you have already done, but you just felt COMPELLED to tell us this) to hold your hand in locating better deals for ya.

The Dell deals are great! It's too bad I have no need to buy a new system every week

I have to agree with By-Tor. I stopped looking at the deals page because of the Dell deals so now I just read the forums. Sure, it's good to know about the deals every now and then, but not every day!

I love seeing the new Dell deals every day. Sometimes it would be nice if they were trumped by the better deals below, but I understand that this site operates on referrals, and great deals don't always mean good cuts to Apex et al.

Anyway, I watched the Dells for months before I finally found a deal I couldn't pass up, and I got the exact computer I wanted for about $200-$300 less than I would've paid from another vendor, or even at another time from Dell.

whoa whoa whoa DF...

take it easy!

I posted a thread in Off Topic similar to this and found some company behind me. I personally believe the deals are getting more and more craptastic, so I check:

http://www.fatwallet.com/c/18/
and
http://www.techbargains.com/

Got|Apex's main page is one of the best non-forum sites still, but the focus has very much shifted in the past 4 years to be bought out in a way. Forum sites are much better for finding deals because there is zero incentive for posting the deal, and there are forum posters don't have to make a commitment to any one company, just the places that have the best deals. You still have to wade through a lot of poo, but that doesn't differ much the way the Deals page has become IMO.

I do, however, direct people to use the Dell coupons off the main page, as to keep Apex happy.

You wanna ride off with him... :hmm: :woo:

You don't come up in here talkin' trash about G|A and such and expect NOT to hear from the loyal following....

Now if folks was paying a SUBSCRIPTION fee to be here, then maybe they'd have a legitimate gripe... but as long as it is FREE to them, they can take it or leave... and fortunately most of us LIKE taking all the good deals that come across here (which includes a good Dell deal every now and then).

This is the one of the few places where you can almost count on a good Dell deal to come by so that you can pass that info on to someone who needs it... so yes, I stick by what I said earlier.

Now git back to peelin'... unless you have a problem with those statements. :2far:

I think it's a fair complaint. Roughly 7 -12% of our deals on average come from Dell. We'll post whatever people are interested in, and if enough people become disinterested in Dell, it'll be switched out, or bumped down. We do listen to each of our viewers and take into account their thoughts, though we can't always answer each one individually.

Hey, Apex agrees. It's based from our comments, such as this thread. Don't hate on feedback and comments about how we sees it :disa: You see it one way, we see it another.

I come to this sight predominantly because of the Dell deals - and because of it I have found several others that I have benefited from. Don't change a thing - except bring more Dell deals! I'm currently looking for a deal on a laptop.

Coupon coded Dell deals are great, but I think less "deals" that are straight up prices yanked from Dell's website would be better.

i'm tired of all these site-crappers...i mean seriously, if you have some gripe about something, you can address it, but there's no need to slam on it.

AND i wouldn't be to quick to judge on those dell deals...not only have i referred NUMEROUS people to g|a, but if you can find some other site that helped you jump on a deal with landed you with a FREE (yes i said FREE) 17" lcd (worth $500+ btw)....then by all means, be my guest.

there is such a thing as constructive criticism, and then there's flaming....who really cares if this website uses sponsered links to help run and maintain this FREE access website...yes, you access this website for FREE. i mean you try to maintain a resource as complex as this and have some guy crap on all your work....f-that...

I like the Dell deals like most of us here since we refer others to it. But what I don't like is that updates are in random order (except Dell always are on top). Why not post sequentially so that the newer deals go on top so that if we come back to the site to check any new sites, you don't have to look through the whole day's worth of deals. But otherwise, GotApex rocks.

as always: you can please some of the people some of the time, but not all of the people all of the time.

i too, have sent people to the Got/Apex front page for Dell deals and saved them some bucks. it's a great resource.

The 2400 deal is not that bad for a beginner computer since you can't really build one for the same price. I am buying one for my uncle but I want to wait to see if I could get in a better deal or not.

that is what i was told also by two guys in the business. they both said they cannot build a computer w/ software included for the price of that 2400 dell.

Ok.. one day they'll all be gone and folks will STILL complain.

Either way, most of us don't mind... a few do... are the "special interests" gonna win this argument? :2far:

I say we put it to a VOTE....

So far, in this thread alone, the MAJORITY wanna keep it the way it is... or roughly the same.

The Dell deals are just fine... scrolling past them is easy enough. I have noticed tho', a definate decline in the postings by individuals in the "Got|Deals" forum however. Seems with the demise of MysterX and Passwird's infrequent postings, there are alot fewer to choose from. :passwird:

Well, this deserves an explanation.

You see, GotApex caters to a pretty wide range of clientele, probably wider than most technology type sites. Of course there are viewers like yourselves, which are pretty internet savvy. No problem there. However, we do get a lot of people who are very new to the internet who are looking to buy computers for their kids or something, that really benefit from having deals that they're interested in be at the top. That's why we spell stuff out step by step too.

It's impossible to please absolutely everyone, but I think we've found a reasonably good balance. The internet is always changing though, so what's here today, may be changed tomorrow. :)

Good enough for me. It's your site Apex, you know what's the best balance for advertising. I wasn't trying to bash the site, god knows I've used it on many, many occasions. This is the first site I go to to find a deal on Dell's. By my count, I've linked through AT LEAST 10-15 computers over the past 3+ years... That's just ones that I've bought, not including referrals... My only grief is that whenever I opened up the deals page, it ALWAYS seems to be a Dell deal at the top, hot or not. Apparently it's that way by design, and I understand that now. Keep up the good work, I'll always be here. I just wanted to voice a concern, that's all. Thanks.

Oh, this would be a good thread to bring up my newegg suggestion. Apex, work some of that bargaining magic with newegg to throw us an awesome deal or coupon every once in a while. I got referred to their site after some friends raved about it, and they were right to rave.

Plus, since there's a lot of us "computer nerd" types here, I'm sure you'd get plenty of people looking to upgrade or get components for a build.

that is what i was told also by two guys in the business. they both said they cannot build a computer w/ software included for the price of that 2400 dell.

Yeah, you could probably get by making the hardware at that amount, but the software cost make it near impossible. Unless, you know....YARRRRR. But that's just wrong.

Honesty, I'd be hard pressed to build a computer that I was willing to stand behind for $399... software or not.

Hell, just a decent mobo, CPU, and memory will cost you around that much...

ialsohaveadream
08-30-2004, 10:23 PM
If you pick up some of those case/mobo deals that Apex and Newegg have (with rebates bringing it down to about $20 or even free), it's possible. You'd have to take a pass on a graphics card, I would think.

my biggest complaint now about the deals page is that i may check early in the morning....but it gets updated later, and unless I scroll through the whole list (which can be the length of the whole page), i don't know about any new ones. what I'd like to see is some indexing or something, to easily keep track of new updates. either that or deals posted chronilogically.

Apex
08-30-2004, 11:59 PM
I'll look into the newegg suggestion. They've not been very receptive in the past to partnerships of any kind, but there may be a way.

We'll also try to think of something for the later updated deals.

Thanks.

And thanks everyone for your understanding. I know our layout is not the most intuitive for you guys here (who are much more experienced online), but you guys are also the most flexible. Believe me, there are many who would not be able to scroll down to find deals, and we still want to be able to reach them. Eventually, the greater buying power will help everyone. :)

I like the Dell deals, as I have referred probably 25-30 sales through them since I joined here. I also send as many newbies and non-technical people as I can here as an example of a "no BS" deals site.

Also, I agree with some of the other opinions in that it is Apex's site, and, as "Benevolent Dictator" he should run it and compose it as he sees fit.

As another poster pointed out, Apex (and co.) handles things most professionally...
