Should I normalize when ripping CDs? Is there ever an instance where one doesn't want to normalize??

no, unless it does statistical analysis (most don't). all it does is compress the dynamic range.
If you want your mp3's to have the same average volume, use mp3gain.

Only normalize when you are burning a cd, not ripping a cd.

I've had normalizing cause major problems to some live albums I have, especially if there is a track of talking. It's also messed up some of my classical albums.
So I avoid it.

Yeah, normalizing really screws up Pink Floyd's music. It only helps in cases where the sound is so quiet you can't hear it. It definitly takes some of the emotion out of music when the volume is all the same.
