i'm surprised if this isn't a repost, but i searched to no avail. i don't think i should put this under games since it's more of a brain teaser type thing. it took me a few minutes, but it's interesting to see what hypotheses people come up with for the solutions.

if you figure it out, pretty please don't tell how and spoil it for everyone else. half the fun is watching people struggle and  like some of my friends have only to laugh once they know the method. don't think too hard and enjoy :D

If you're still trying to figure this out, you may want to skip this post.

Anyways, I spent like 2 hours trying to do this a week or so ago when my friend showed it to me. What was stupid was that I came up with a mathematical way of doing it that had nothing to do with the dots. So for another hour I couldn't figure out why it was called petals around the rose :throw:

I have no idea how I figured it out...no i didnt scroll down and see Mike N ikes post for the hint.

I had 1 wrong answer.

I have no idea how i solved it that fast

I remember back when I was in like 7th grade advanced math my teacher asked us this same question, but worded differently. She called it the "polar bear club" and rolled the dice a couple times and would tell us how many "polar bears" were on the ice or something along those lines. If you were able to successfully tell her the number three times in a row you would get a candy bar or something. I think about 1/3 the class got it on the first try while the rest were sort of dumbfounded.

...I don't think this wording gives any more of a hint as to how to figure out the number, but gives another way to think about it if roses aren't your thing

Well dayuuum.... Time to pick the petals....

She loves me...
She love me not...

(Yeah, I figured it out too... but I just can't believe folks come up with this stuff...)

i was half-guessing it, until it came to me.
adding all the numbers each time the die are rolled didnt do sheit (got little to do with it). i shoulda listened to usedillusion's suggestion - dont think too hard.
took me a million tries (ok, over an hour). i was focusing on something, and knew it had to do with it, just didnt know what. then it hit me - in the end its very simple. why cant i think like a little child anymore? :)

as are the rules of the game, only 3 things can be told:
1)i can tell you the name of the game is Petals Around The Rose.
2)i can tell you the answer to every roll.
3)the answer is always even or zero.

hints that, in hindsight, actually tell you the solution.

for those who were or are stumped, Bill Gates couldn't get it (http://www.borrett.id.au/computing/petals-bg.htm) for an hour and a half, either. wait, is that even of consolation? :shifty:

Funny thing about Bill, he began to get answers right, but not consistently. He admitted that he was remembering throws he'd seen before, along with the answers, but had no plausible theory to account for answers.

It had taken Dr. Duke well over a year himself, and he would always explain that the smarter you were, the longer it took to figure it out.

Looks like Jenny's the smartest of us all

Interesting game. I started off trying to figure out some mathematical reasoning, but then looked at it more simply. 5 minutes.

I thought it was common sense really. They are dice. If I were to imagine the die was a flower, how would it look. How would I count petals if this die was a flower.

Its all how you look at it I guess. I would have to guess that if someone couldnt figure out that question, then maybe they are an analyzer.
