A fanatic vegan who kidnapped his 14-month-old son in Brooklyn is hiding in the woods - and vowing to kill the boy if cops come after him, his mother-in-law said yesterday.

Being a vegan, shouldn't he mold and not rot?

Oh the irony...if he is out there too long he may have to eat his own meaty son. Legs or thighs or ribs sir?

Just shows how biased the media is. The fact that they even mentioned he was a vegan is ridiculous. Since when do people's diets matter? When they were looking for the unibomber they called him a lunatic, they didn't mention whether he eats meat or not.

"Screaming that the toddler was not eating healthy food, Raphael Spindell, 34, snatched little Andre from his maternal grandmother in Coney Island Saturday and has been missing with the boy and the child's mother since.
I would say that his diet and beliefs led partially to the event. So, yes it is pertinent in this case.

yeah it's pertinent... he happened to choose veganism as the focal point of his deep-seated psychosis. it's reasonable to infer from the info given that he is white and and 25-35 years old... meaning 99% chance that this is his big opening act for his brand-spankin-new case of schizophrenia. wheee!

Vegan sounds so ..ummm...robustThere's a difference between the two. Some vegetarians think its ok to eat fish, milk, cheese, eggs, etc.
Vegans are hardcore. No animal product, period. That means staying away from things like gelatin, animal based cooking fat, and a lot of other things that don't immediately come to mind.

honey
processed sugarcane
leather
lanolin
canta i agree with you in some regards but i don't think it's bias as much as interest. i would also want to know if he'd kidnapped the kid because he thought he wasn't getting enough beef in his diet.

Nutritionally, the vegan diet is most at risk of insufficiently providing for protein, calcium, iron, zinc and vitamin B12. This is due to the fact that animal products are their major source.

not very expensive actually. veggies are cheap as compared to meat & dairy.
This is due to the fact that animal products are their major source.
only in a typical western diet.
although yoru statement still carries some weight as a lot of vegans never learn how to eat properly and since most folks are raised eating "meat and taters" they don't know how to get proper nutrition froma vegan diet.

only the ones that are sprayed with chemicals on mass-production farms are cheap. i know its not technically a part of the vegan credo, but most buy very expensive organic stuff... and when it comes to toiletries and other household products, being a vegan is VERY expensive. no animal parts or testing... no 99 cent shampoo for you!
and if you want to get complete nutrition from a vegan diet, it's not cheap, period. you have to buy expensive obscure stuff to cover all your bases...

having folllowed a vegan diet for a while, i have to say that's not been my experience. maybe you can't get 99 cent shampoo, but you can get $1.99. i also know a fair number of vegans who don't buy organic simply for the fact that they can't afford it.
also remember that lots of vegans are connected to the local farmer's scene. at many farmer's markets you can get organic produce for the same price as a grocery store's regular produce. (at least around here anyway).
and sure, some stuff is more expensive. like soy milk...costs more that milk. but some things are cheaper, like belts. good canvas belts are cheaper than leather. or say spaghetti. carnivores usually put meat & tomato sauce, vegans don't have to buy the meat.
as an interesting side note, today on npr they reported a study which showed that organically grown vegetables have more nutrients. i wonder if it's true.

yeah, but if you are reasonably smart with how you eat as a vegan, you can easily get sufficient quantities.
for instance, the average u.s. diet contains WAY more protein than the body needs. and the digestion of protein tends to leech calcium from the body. so if you eat a more reasonable amount of protein, you don't need as much calcium in the first place.
sure, vegans may have to be a little more conscious of their diet to ensure that they're getting enough of some vitamins (such as b-12), but they can still easily eat a healthy diet.

You know, I imagine that not eating animal products is medium in dificulty, what I imagine is hard is not using animal products. I just can't imagine like a pillow with no down, no cotton, or no leather, or sugar since the carbon dioxide that made the sugar most likely came from a dead mistreated animal.

well, last i checked cotton was not an animal product. you can get vegan sugar, even "white sugar" which comes from beets. down is no big deal.
the biggest one is leather for shoes. i've owned a few pair of leather-alternative [read: plastic] shoes and they sucked. but canvas shoes are fine.
