View Full Version : Got MMORPG?
Being part of the "Heck no, I ain't paying to play" camp, I've broken down and decided to try an MMORPG. Just wondering in anyone had suggestions on which one to try. I'm more of an action and sci-fi type person and was looking at Anarchy Online or Planetside.
These games are getting a little dated though, so I'm wondering if a lot of people still play. Or get whooped up on (PK'ed or whatnot) because I'm a newb to the genre. TIA

Right now, City of Heroes seems to be the obvious choice of most folks...
City of Heroes buddy, check it out! Planetside was ok but go boring really quick - I don't even know if people still play it much anymore.

I think this one has been around a little while, but I've heard Star Wars: Galaxies is pretty fun. Are you a Final Fantasy fan? There's Final Fantasy XI too.

I still refuse to pay a monthly fee for a game. Won't ever happen. Never say never? I'm saying never.

I'm with you. I think that unfortunately games will all probably go down that road in the near future....at least multiplayer games.
Thanks for all the replies y'all. Are most of the MMORPG's out there slow-paced, like Morrowind for instance? I found that one painful and gave up after a few hours. I used to like all the FF games, especially 7, but have gotten more and more action oriented over the years. This makes me think I shouldn't even bother with an MMORPG, but I didn't want to write 'em off before trying one.
Was thinking Star Wars, but a friend played and I don't think I'd like it the way he described the gameplay. I read up on the City of Heroes stuff in this forum, but wasn't sure about that one either. Sounded like folks got tired of the repetition with only a few mission types. Time to do some research.
Hmm...just noticed SW Battlefront comes out in a few. Decisions, decisions. :)

The sucked the fun right out of it trying to balance classes that work, while not FIXING classes that didn't work.

I play EvE now. It is a all-PVP MMORPG set in space. It can take a month to really understand a lot of the inner workings of it - the new Shiva expansion is coming in a couple months and that will be a good thing for sure. It is quite beautiful visually too.

There is an EvE 14-day trial program going on with MMORPG.com I think. GIve that a look before you pay anything.

All great multiplayer games are bound to go to the pay as you play system once the tech of single player games can reach the massive levels which mmorpg's require while still meeting a decent sytem spec and fps rate.
I would suggest getting DAoC. You can get a copy off of ebay for super cheap, and probly even pick up an account for even cheaper thats a starter account. DAoC has the best pvp Ive ever played in an MMORPG. The Frontiers are corrupt yes, but the "battlegrounds" are tons of fun.
There are battlegrounds for almost all levels. You port in, and battle with the other 2 realms for a castle in the middle of the map. Once you have it, you defend against the other 2 realms. If you can manage to reach level 45-50, you can venture in the frontiers and wage war and take over the millions of keeps out there, raid relic keeps, etc. DAoC has the best class selections out of all MMORPGS. They do a some-what decent job of keeping the realms balanced, with bg's in mind..frontiers however can get little different.
With the new expansion comming soon on the horizon, it will add a new race and 1 new class to albion, and 2 for hibernia and midgard. They are doing a good job at keeping the game alive I think, EQ sort of fell through once Luclan came out, but Mythic (no matter how terrible they are), are doing a decent job. I am even thinking of staying with DAoC till EQ2 instead of switching to WoW. I was impressed with WoW durring the stress test, but wasnt "that" impressed. Ill wait till open beta to fully decide, but DAoC still has my vote for some awesome pvp.
Also, if you get DAoC, I have a 50 necromancer on Galahad, and I could powerlevel you when I have time to get you some extra levels.
Another incentive for you to get DAoC and play is that on servers with the least population, you get free levels! On some, you can level, then log off for 2 days, and get a free level....yea its pretty cool. Also the camp bonus for when you fight the monsters to exp are set to max most of the time now.
They are trying to make the game esier for newcomers and for people switching to the underpopulated servers.
See you in Dark Age of Camelot :)

Yea, once they screwed my rifleman i quit. But i hear they are pretty decent now. I spent like 5 hours straight of kiting mobs (solo) to get it...

I'm playing City of Heroes and I really like it.
It's a really simple game albeit a lot repetitive.
1. Kill enemies
2. Repeat
Even the missions are all like that. You find some good stuff like story arcs and some of the enemies are awesome looking....but if you're not into the kill, rinse repeat thing then it wouldn't be for you.

All the pictures of ingame on their site are photoshoped.
I played the E3 deal they had for I think it was 5 days? Doesnt look that crisp in game, but it does look pretty decent. DAoC will look better once Catacombs comes out with the Graph re-vamp.
The thing is, it is free, but for each "update" will end up being an "expansion" which you will in the end have to pay for. So if your content with the initial release of the game, then cool..but if you want the new missions, etc., your going to pay for them. This was being discussed durring the E3 deal they had, sorta had people in an uproar.
It is fun though, the interaction with the npcs on some of the missions are awesome, you really feel part of the story.
Id stick with DAoC though. pvp is the factor that keeps the game going for most mmorpgs, and DAoC wins, although the teams fighting they had was fun....hopefully they balanced it though. I just kept getting chased by warriors and knocked to the floor so I couldnt get a nuke off.
I think the ultimate MMorpg would be WoW, but allowing guilds to create WC3 style perks. Let guilds take control over lands and raid others, like Shadowbane combined with DAoC type deal. Still have that PvE element, but in PvP, allow the domination of the battle grounds and have that strategy/building element as well.
I think it would be awesome to see people run around and build guard towers, fortifications, like SB. Shadowbane had a great idea going, but failed on the delivery.

why I didnt like the beta
To repetitive, and untill now, they didnt have the pvp of good vs. evil yet. Im glad to see they have that expansion now though, but still wont convince me to buy the game...they had the opportunity and its passed :2far:
Thanks for all the great replies. Good recommendation Kevster. I've been playing EVE for about 5 days now. Surprisingly addictive, though a bit slow. Been watching movies and playing at the same time since traveling's a bit tedious.
Have a Rifter and Probe right now and am going to try getting a Hoarder for some big time mining action. With the industrial skill, secure containers, and ship costs I still need another 300K though.
Fas-ligand: I loved all the FF games up until 8. I've had 8-10 for years and have yet to finish them, let alone play them. Guess I grew out of that type of RPG.
Blitz: Thanks for the offer. Think I'm all played out on fantasy games right now. Time to blow things up w/ lasers and rockets! :)

I have quite a fleet now after 6 months of playing EvE. :) I just built my 4th battleship (another Megathron) and now I am branching out economically with my corp pretty well. There is a LOT of different ways to make money in EvE, mining just happens to be the easiest way at the beginning. We do a lot of trade and build a lot of different ships and equipment, including a lot of the new Tech-II stuff like cloaked frigates and the new assault frigates.
If you ever want to look me up, I'm usually on as my main character Augustus Var - my corp is called Gold Diggers Inc. - the corp ticker is GDI.

I actively play probably about 15 hours a week. Maybe 20 at the most. I also can play away from keyboard or check on it occasionally if I'm doing something really mind-numbingly boring like mining. I just use my best industrial ship and equip it with a mining laser and target a big asteroid as a field and mine away while I do something else.
There are lots of things to do - I have been doing missions quite a bit lately as they provide a lot more stimulus and are more difficult and complex the higher you go.

Cool! I ended up subscribing and have been trying to play as much as possible. 4 battleships...nice. I'm thinking about skipping battleships and go for assault frigs, maybe assault cruiser. I like speed over the super damage. Hopefully I'll get a Wolf soon, though they're around 40-75 mil. Ouch.

My corp normally runs out of the Sinq Laison region which is right on the border between Gallente and Caldari space. I am also in The Forge and Everyshore quite a bit too. Our HQ is in Dodenvale, but we regularly operate in many of the surrounding systems.
My corp, GDI, is a serious carebear corp meaning that our CEO is as cautious and neutral as possible. I don't have a problem with that since there are some big advantages to being a Switzerland-like Corp in EvE. We have had Pirate Corps try to extort money from us and we called in a couple "favors" we have and the Pirates quickly "went away". That is the reason why GDI is over 18 months old and has not had a single war declared on it (we have many good friends). There are very few corps that can say that in EvE. ;)
I have had individual pirates try to trap me in mining fields (ones with a .4 or lower security status), but so far I have been lucky. Wherever I am mining I make sure I have escape routes already set and can get away quickly if someone with a negative security status comes into the system. It is quite interesting talking with them on local while they are trying to hunt you. I also have participated in "pirate removal operations" with an alternate character. Sometimes you have to do pest control before you can mine in a sector. ;)

Yes. You can have up to 3 different characters per account. I have mixed mine up so that I get to play different character types and experience more of the game's complexity that way. it is also handy to have different alts in different regions to check on the market prices (they vary by region, depending on supply and demand, in EvE).

It looks like our CEO wants to carve out a niche for the corp and is willing to deal with player pirates to do it. Heard we might have our first official/unofficial war coming up. PvP looks interesting, but I'm already getting smashed left and right on lvl3 kill agent missions. I'd imagine PvP is more challenging.
So, if I get blown up too much can I come over to GDI? :)

:heh: Oh how I know lvl 3 agent combat missions! They are definitely not easy that's for sure. If PvP isn't your thing, definitely come on over to GDI. Our HQ is in Dodenvale, Sinq Laison region. Shorin, the CEO of GDI, has been around since beta and knows many, many things about EvE. The only drawback to GDI right now is we don't have many active players at this time and there can be times where you're the only corp member on. We can be summed up as ultra-neutral free-lancers that generally work on our own or in small groups. We do have organized group mining outings that can generate some serious mineral quantities though.

Cool. I'll keep y'all in mind. I don't do much w/ my corp right now and am used to doing things alone. Also, I'm fine defending corp ships for PvP every once in a while, but I have a feeling our CEO's going to be stirring up some nests getting our territory established.
I almost regret moving my personal hq to the lvl3 kill agent. Lost my Rupture on the first mission, but just got a replacement, and Minmatar supplies out that way are kinda sparse. I'm down to that and my Hoarder now cause I was too lazy to move all my ships out there.
:puke: Mining. Not my cup of tea, but it helped me get going fairly quickly.

Might have been your loadout. Until I got afterburners and micro warp drives, I used long range items. I got the to point where I could shoot and missle rats from so far away they didn't attack me. :johnwoo2: Think that's why I was getting so bored w/ lvl 2 kill missions. My cruiser's range far exceeded the rats range for shooting me, let alone responding to my presence.
Long range is definately the safest route to go, though the least fun IMO.

I normally fight in a Kestrel or Maulus frigate against cruiser-size NPCs. It adds a bit of excitement to it since if I allow them to get close to their range they can start pounding me pretty bad. I'm usually moving quick enough to not allow them to get a good lock on me and they miss a lot.
I have tried to avoid the "tanking" style of fighting and instead have learned the art of killing things much bigger than myself in smaller ships. This has helped me understand the advantages and trade-offs of different ships, weapons and modules very well. I tend to fight in more of a "boxer" style by picking them apart with the right ammo and weapons. That means I often will use combat drones as sacrificial lambs to take some of the heat off of me because I can easily replace them.
Yippiekiyeh, I have lost many ships already. I had a brand-new Merlin frigate for about 10 minutes before I lost it by warping into an asteroid field right in the middle of a large group of NPC pirates. I lost my first 3 cruisers before I really knew what I was doing well enough to equip them and fly correctly. Every loss has been a very humbling experience, but I definitely learned valuable lessons from each one. All I can say is I'm glad NPCs don't pod-kill. ;)
If you need anything, just let me know in-game and I can see what I can do for you. I still have a lot of spare equipment I can give you to replace the stuff that was lost. If you guys need any help don't hesitate to ask. Also, if I am not on as my main character Augustus Var, I may be on as Supox or Trionyx, my other characters.
Here's a picture of a recent close-call with a nasty group. I got them all, but I almost ended up in a pod with all my armor gone and 19% structural integrity left :P

LOL sorry DF, but eve is beyond complex, layers and layers of things to do, people to kill and things to steal (just for rhyming purposes). I am totally overwhelmed as a EVE noob. But it is fun. I finally got a Punisher class frigate and I'm starting to do the "kite" style of killing, where I can out range them and I just fly along and blast away with impunity, I'm sure it's only going to get tougher. But I am having a blast! I can't believe how LARGE the game universe is! Whoa!
