Hey all, :wavey2:

I'm into all the vintage games, those considerd 'abandonware' or anything realy from my childhood. You cannot imagine the old adventure games without the name 'Sierra' comming to mind, They pioneered the genre with their classic "King's Quest" series, and added to that an abundance of enjoyable Quest series. :king:

If you have news, questions, coments, fond memories, or anything to share about the good old days of Adventure games, or are a part of the small but indismissible group who are trying to bring adventure gaming back, then make a post and we'll see where this forum takes us. :thumb:

To start off, if you love the 'King's Quest' or 'Quest for Glory' series, then you need to check out http://www.agdinteractive.com/ . These guys call themselves Tierra and they put alot of work into reconstructing some of these classic adventure games for us. I hope you have as much fun playing them as I did.

Talking about independant remakes, here's some websites that might interest you:

I love the Kings Quest games. My favorites were 2, 5 and 6. I bought this KQ collection off some guy on ebay a couple years back but I had a lot of problems running it in XP. Oh well...

I'm downloading KQ 2 off of that site you linked right now. :)

My favorate King's Quest was #6, but I started with #2, so that will always have a special, nostelgic place in my heart.

Did you ever play Nuclear War? it was a great game.
I think so, AKA Thermal Global Nuclear War, and I was seriously addicted (loved the humor).

One more thing,

if any of you are playing old games in Windows (any version) and experiencing problems, you need to download DosBox. That's right, it's an emulator of the old DOS operating system, and it plays old games very sucessfuly. It converts your sound card to the correct Sound Blaster settings too, so enjoy playing with sound!

The very first adventure game I played for the PC was something called "LOOM" (I still actually have the CD here). The main thing I remember is that you would perform "spells" on various objects by keying in a sequence of notes. For all you Zelda fans, yes this means that Ocarina of Time was NOT the first game to use such a system.

It was a simple game, but back when I had my first 2x CD-ROM drive, it was my first taste of adventure games (next was King's Quest 5).

I've kept some of the classics that I used to like and still pull them out from time to time. If anyone wants me to e-mail them a copy, let me know.

Rogue (now we're talking old school)
Nuke War
Kings Bounty

Anyone out there ever play UFO? I love that game and picked up a copy, but it runs too fast on todays computers.

Zork has been updated and converted quite a few times. I played it on a color mac a few years back, for instance. Zork never dies, it just gets parsed better.

(was included in the "Creative Multimedia Package" [cutting edge 2xSpeed CD-ROM drive, Sound Blaster PRO, cd full of cliparts, AVIs, WAVs, and GIFs, and BMPs.])

Dude, you know it! I was way too addicted to that game, and I loved all three of them.
There are utilities that slow down your computer (like cpukiller), which allow you to run the old games at a playable speed. However if you use the dosbox, you'll probably be okay.

Thanks for the links. I knew there were programs out there, but I never took the time to loof for them. I had only played the first UFO when I was in college, but I picked up a pack that had all three in them. I'll have to check out the slowing program!

I'm glad I noticed this thread! I almost never hang out in the games area, but I am an avid abandonware collector and player. I've got probably well over 100 titles of varying age. I'm currently working my way through the Wizardrys (on 3 now, using an apple emulator that can emulate the apples 2, 2C, and 2E), as well as Commander Keen 6 and PGA Tour Golf.

When I was around 15 (1995) I was at a computer show in NJ and got really excited cause I found a Zork Anthology (all the origionals 1-3, Beyond, Zero). The guy at the booth (mid 50's) couldnt believe I had ever heard of the game...untill I started rattling off the secrets in Zork 1

there was also a similar one where you were trapped on an alien planet and had to resurrect a dead race to get back home.

What about the O.G. Adventure game. Adventure, straight up Atari.\

That was MY favorite, especially the "random" level. Crude graphics, but I accidentally found the secret area and read about it as an egg sometime later. Also found that you could "hang" the game there if not careful.

i was totally down with zork. i beat zork 1 all by myself, and used only one cheat to beat zork 2... took me and a friend all summer. it was awesome.

my sister palyed all the kings quests, through like 11...

and i'm sure i could re-addict myself to wahtever the current version of civilization is... i played a lot of 1 and 2 in undergrad.

the fun part is to bring back those old games and play them from scratch.

I did that with Leisure Suit Larry #1 and it was a blast. I don't think I ever made it through the first time I tried, but after going through 2 through 6, #1 seemed excessively easy.

I've played quite a few adventure games lately that I'm embarresed to admit, I didn't finish the first time round. I still feel pretty victorious in an adventure-junkie sort of way. Right now I'm playing Monkey Island 4 for the first time (lol), what a blast!

Recently I introduced my two little cousins to Kings Quest I+II (AGD), they love it and what a joy to watch them play the same games that excited me as a kid.

What level had the springboards that were annoying, and you had to watch out for piranhas on the ropes?

Didn't you turn off the turbo button? (Or did you buy one that came without it?)
Actually that machine was the turning point where the better programmers finally realized that games need to run on clock cycles rather than full-speed. It also meant that lazier programmers no longer had to worry about optimizing code for speed...and it led to big blob applications like Windows 98/ME/XP and Office 97/2000/2002/XP, with more to come. Well, it's not likely to change soon so we're stuck with larger and larger (and cheaper) hard drives and memory. (Maybe it's not so bad after all.)

Jontas
04-14-2005, 11:55 PM
Yeah I'm pretty sure I would have turned off the turbo switch if I had one.
Like girlfriends, computers have come and gone over the years and some memories get a little hazy. Sometimes you need a change of scenary and sometimes you just gotta upgrade.
Yes I'm tired, which results in me getting a little philisophical (not to mention the spelling errors), but I think I've got a point there boys and girls. Am I right?
