My wife and I were shopping at Ralphs for groceries last night and getting our deli meats. This woman starts walking towards me with an extremely noisy kid in the cart and is staring at me. She then turns to the kid and says, "Do you want me to tell the man that you are not behaving! Do you want me to have the man hit you? Don't make me tell the man!" So now I have both the woman and the kid staring at me, with the kid suddenly shutting up. Of course, I want 100% sure she was threatening the kid that I would hit him, but that was the feeling I got, so I just figured I was mistaken and I would ignore it. As we walked away, I said to my wife WTH, did you think that woman was threatening that I would hit the kid? She agreed but had thought that there was no way, so like me ignored it.

So we walk down the next aisle where this woman appears again, the kid is once again shouting and she says, "There's the man. Do I need to get him? Do I need to tell him that you arent listening? Do you want me to have the man hit you?"

Obviously, this time there was no question she was talking about me. All I have to say is WTF is wrong with that woman! Who the hell uses a complete stranger as a threat against a little kid? On top of that, the woman and child were Mexican and fairly dark vs. me the 6'5" white guy. Honestly that is just screwed up. That kid can be screwed up for life!

Wow. Maybe daddy's the only one who can keep junior in line (by means of smacking him) so the lady was using a combination of "Stranger Danger" and "Male adults will kick your ass" strategy because she had bad parenting skills. That is horrible!

Holy cow.... Thats just scary... I'd uhh run away? Hmm thats some next level weirdness... I wonder what would happen if the kid didn't get quiet? Would she really expect you to go whack the kid? I'm pretty sure you wouldn't but dang thats odd.... Maybe the women has a fear of the white man that she has instilled in her kids... who knows.... But jolly good story.

Parents always use different figures to scare their children so nothing is new.

You should have told the kid, "Do you want me to punch your momma in the face? Do you?"

:heh: i'm crazy enough and my kids are crazy enough that i can almost understand...

i'd never do that myself, tho... it's just flat-out rude to use someone else like that without their consent.

are you particularly scary-looking, perhaps? :P

Maybe the kid is a special needs kid and that's the only way she can get him to be afraid of authority.

My brother always responded to wierd tactics like that, but I have to admit that indirectly threatening anyone through the noninvolved isn't a good idea. I'll have Canta lay the smack down on her for that.

My wife said she's going to try that with the kids in the future.

My parents did that when I was a little kid. We had a neighbor that neutered--in my old country--animals and it worked all the time.

She's teachin' the kid very early in life to "Be VERY VERY AFRAID of "The Man".

Being 6'5" just hammers the point home... :shifty:

You should've hit her for talking too much... that would've struck the point home for the kid.

sounds like a bad case of trailer park diva... making sure eeeeeeverybody within earshot knows about her problems... because she's so proud of them. just gotta shrug it off and never never never engage in conversation with them... it's like feeding a stray.
