Con Edison electric manhole fires. Con Ed's electrical facilities on W38th St. and 8th Av. let go causing a big underground fire. The gases from the fire caused the manhole to fly into the air. No one was hurt.

No one was hurt.Yeah, it was quite a pop. We heard a few tremendous BANGS! outside, and we're on the 17th floor. I went down to the ground, and traffic's all screwed up and people are starting to congregate. Cops already had about 4 blocks shut down (right near Lincoln Tunnel too. Glad I wasn't driving home). A LOT of smoke was coming out of the 38th St. Block, between 8th and 9th Aves. That and an acrid smell like ozone, betraying the electrical nature of the explodsion. I couldn't get near enough to see anything cool. No big deal in the end.
Afterward, I didn't feel like going back to the office, so I called my buddy who lives nearby, and we went out and hit a couple bars and then hung at his place, listening to tunes and such :bandit:.
So Yeah, I heard it was some transformer underground that blew. There's an investigation going on though as to how it happened, so stay tuned...

i was around herald sq. tonight and i saw the fire department hazmat truck and then the police emergency command unit go SCREAMING down 34th street around 6 p.
later, i came out of a store and saw a police chopper hovering over the 8th ave area, and smelled some awful-smelling smoke. of course, that might have just been the shish-ke-bob vendors on 34th, who seem to have perpetual fires in their damn carts.
