View Full Version : Diablo II questions: This game is hard!

Hehe, just keep running around and you'll find it. The best advice I can give is keep heading east and you'll find everything you need to do, but the monsters become more vicious!
I'm playing on a "archive" copy so I have no clue about the game. Got my Sorceress up to level 13 and only died at level 3 once, so I think I'm doing OK.
Does anybody know if we get penalized for getting Kashya's Hire's killed? I'm going through them like Kleenex. Not cuz I suck, they just can't keep up with me when I flee to get to a better position and get killed.
Oh, and for the identify scrolls, you need them until you "rescue" cain who will ID everything for you.
Does anybody have advice on how I should research spells for my sorceress? Don't know whether to concentrate it or disperse?

Hehe I'm almost out of mercenaries too. They really suck. I always mean to use a town portal so I can re-energize me and my hire when her energy gets low, but the game moves so fast at times that I can't. Does anyone know how to stick gems in weapon/helm/armor sockets? I can't seem to do it.
pennypinch
07-06-2000, 09:19 AM
Wow, way harder than the old one. I just have two questions:
1) Is there a way to identify items without using the scroll's? I remember there was a guy in the town in the first game. Did they cut him?
2) WHERE IS THE GODDAMN UNDERGROUND PASSAGE!!
I hate asking for help with a game, but it was driving me nuts last night, and it was the first night I've had the game.
Thanx

you have to "gem" your socketed weapons before you equip them. i have a cross bow with three different gems in it right now and it rocks!
pennypinch
07-06-2000, 01:32 PM
Yeah, only (too late!) I realized you can't swap gems between weapons. Once they're in, man, they're gone.

did any of you guys actually take time to read the game manual?? i did before i even started playing and it has helped a great deal. there is a reason that blizzard (and any company for that matter) spends so much time and effort on making the manual as straight-forward and as helpful as possible. ***the more you know...***

Manual = sissy http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
Seriously, I was reading through a coupla things in there, but mostly I was just going to play and learn. Did find out some interesting things, though. Just couldn't figure out how to ID items without blowing 80 gold. Also, anyone notice how much harder it is to get gold in this game vs. the first one? And the fact that the items disappear after you leave an area is more realistic, but a total pain in the ass. Remember dropping weapons at the home base? That was good stuff. Now, you're really limited by what you can carry and your stash. http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/frown.gif

I got this greed amulet that gives me 44% more gold from enemies. I'm gettin paid!
colossus
07-06-2000, 06:14 PM
The only really sweet thing I found was a staff that gives me some cold immunity, warmth, and 4% of target's mana per hit. Guess it's only god if I smack the victim though huh?
Too many frickin arrows and bolts, not enough mana. It seems harder for the magic users this time. In Diablo I once the mage got strong he was invincible for the most part.
Any suggestions on how to distribute spell skills?

Anyone finish the game yet? I tell you, act 4 is harder than you've seen. Don't go to act 4 until you're ready cause once you're there, you can go back to the other acts like you could before. Even if you hit save and exit, you won't be able to get back to the other acts without beating the game.

Just rescue Cain and he'll ID everything for you for free. Saves a lot of money that way. Also don't buy too much weapons/armor from the dealers. You'll probably get better stuff in the field than you do at a store. Don't pick up any damaged/low quality/normal items. To maximize your gold, pick up all the magical and superior items and sell them. Once you get to act 3 you'll be complaining about having too much gold! I had over 275,000 gold once, but since my stash could hold only 150,000 I was carrying a lot of gold on me, and I was PRAYING that I wouldn't die!!! =)
Oh one more thing, unless you have more gold than you need, DON'T GAMBLE!!! It's a waste of money!!!! Only once did I get something good out of it. It was a unique and well worth it!! But you'll blow off more money than you could afford if you gamble.

Hey Madcool, what class are you playing? Level 26...that must take some time(seeing how many xp are required per level now). You must not have a girlfriend http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/wink.gif. Pennypinch, You would have gotten the options if you installed multiplayer version also(I did full install 1.5 Gigs http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/frown.gif ). Open means you can play online as well as on computer(although you risk playing with cheats when playing online). If you play online only characters, they can't roam with anyone but online only characters(but at least they can't be hacked).

i don't see how some people have finished the game already. i have been playing off-and-on since monday, yet i haven't even completed act I yet. some people need to get lives other than fighting the evil forces of diablo. http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I have a level 22 Necro(man, my gfriend is hating this game). I picked up the death sash(but couldn't find the other stuff http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/frown.gif ). Anyone have a duplicate of the other stuff? As far as necro advice(save up skill points(if you can) for bone spear)). It whoops butt. if can;t wait...invest in golem mastery and make sure to have level 1 iron maiden.
Realrammstein
07-07-2000, 08:01 AM
oh, and as far as stuff to help you find things...I picked up gauntlets that increase finding magic items by 31%. and then lost them fighting act II boss(along with a bone shield and Kris knife(that did 38 pts damage, made monsters flee, very fast attack, +24 attack rating, +1 mana per hit).

Holy crap! You are a level 22 already! That's insane. I played for, jeez, I don't even know how long last night after work, and am only up to level 10 paladin. Plus, I have crappy weapons. Just a socketed axe I put two chipped sapphires into. Here's a question: if you put a sappire (ice) and a ruby (fire) into a weapon, what happens? I didn't want to waste two gems that would cancel each other, but I'm curious. Any experieces with that?
pennypinch
07-07-2000, 08:41 AM
And I ALSO got the death gloves with my first character, but he kept dying. I didn't think they were all that.
I want those magic-finding gauntlets!
Realrammstein
07-07-2000, 10:45 AM
I miss those gauntlets too. I actually have been taking time off(using 2 hours vacation per day, all week). And probably put in like 8 hours per day. Soooooo 4x8(I didn't game on the 4th....that would be too sad. lol). Are you guys doing battlenet only characters? my BN character is only level 10(sorceress). I got sick of logouts(and waiting for more stability) created this Open character(the Necro). Pennypinch, if you combine both gems it will do both damages(you get to see a flame and freeze thing appear every time you strike someone). I think I even picked up a unique item that had both, once. Although my current falchion's 1-16 lightning + 1-14 poison is a sweet combo. still not as good as that Kris [SNIFF!]. I wish I had your old gauntlets(i have yet to finish assembling any sets. Supposedly when you do, you get extra bonuses.

I assume open and closed mean open characters can play both single and multi? Why was I not given that option? What the Sam Hill is going on here? Oh, maybe because I only installed the single player version...
P.S.: I never had the guantlets, I'm only 10th level...but I want them bad!! That shield w/ the 63 defense would be a-ight too.

Ya I am a level 28 paladin. Playing on nightmare now, hard stuff. I love having my network at home, playing with 3-4 people makes you go up levels a lot faster, not to mention how much easier it is to get good stuff when you can trade with all your budies.
Oh ya someone up above, I think it was gear02 said you couldn't go back to other acts once you go to act 4. Ya you can just use the teleporter and teleport wherever. And ya I haven't found anything good gambling yet, but my friend found a reallllly sweet rare sword that does lots of stuff, so the way I figure it if I have 300k why not spend a few on some items. If I die I lose it anyways. Oh ya that is another thing, on nightmare you lose exp when you die too... that sucks.

Lose experience? that would suck hard! I am thinking of going hardcore after I finish(although I am taking my time now...gearing up by going to different locations). I wanted to go through solo, first time(so the choicest stuff is all mine http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/smile.gif ). Mad, I still say you're insane...lol.

Well, I haven't played as much as you guys, but I still managed to get a Level 17 Sorceress in 5 days all solo. You know easy it easy it is for those magic users to die early on.
I pretty much sucked until I got the Fireball spell. If you're sorceress, save up. Fireball kicks ass. I can kill most normal things in act 1 with 1-2 shots (37-45 HP of fire damage).
I managed to kill Anadariel somehow, boy, that was a nerve racking 10 minutes of running around!
Any advice before I go to Act II?

whoever said once you get to act 4 and can't go back without beating it is wrong. just go on the waypoint and you should see tabs of all the other acts that you can transport to. i have a level 33 necro and haven't been playing for awhile cuz bnet's server is getting real sh*tty. been lagged for a few days so i'm pretty much behind.
MadCool
07-10-2000, 11:17 AM
The lag is really killing the game... I am getting bore of it because of the "Server down" and the huge lag if i can get into a game.

OK, I just killed the boss at the end of Act II! Care to guess how many times it took me to kill him!?! 18 runs using no equipment cuz it wasn't worth trying to requip myself. Is it just me or is the guy at the end of Act II hard for sorceress's? I flew through Act II toasting everything to death with fireball. Didn't even die once until that bastard at the end of Act II. Guess the manual would have helped let me know that he's reistant to fire....bastard!
Oh well, I'm in the jungles now. How come I can't get a decent staff?

Damm it seems like no one is an amazon here. I'm worried about the malus quest. I'm lev 15 but i hear that the guy that guard the hammer is similar to the butcher in diab I. It took me forever to kill that guy. Should i levelup some more? Whats he like? Resistant to anything? Is he fast?

you level 15 then don't have to worry all that much about that guy. just go in and check him out. if you worry about him being fast (he is slower then bosses like derual) then pack some ice spells. but he does have a few minoins so u might want to use dorrway bottleneck. I was nerco so i basically cast summons and ran around =P
Dieing is not a big deal just go abd pick up your stuff and your as god as new (minus some gold)

If you die, and cannot return to the spot where your corspe is, be it too many powerful enemies or what have you, you can exit the game, start a new one and your corpse will appear in town where a town portal would.

I'm in act 3 nightmare. The split second before I die and can't reach a portal because of a surrounding mob I use this technique to save myself from losing experience. Takes a little long but definitely not as long as getting all that experience back.

hurgh?? well what i meant was that if I'm close to dying and potions don't help and I'm surrounded by a mob, I just hit escape and save and exit the game. When I start the game again I have very little health but I did not lose experience because i didn't die. I exit just before I'm about to die. Then when I start again I'm in a safe place so I don't lose the experience. You don't need to pick up the body because you didn't die. Just see the right person and get your health back. One pitfall to this is that all the enemies you killed previously are back again.
