I tried to install SP2 for XP on my Dell. I got the cd today from Microsoft, I followed the checklist at http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/spackins.htm and of course, I closed everything before trying the install. I keep getting "Autorun program has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvience".
Why do I have this problem, is there a way around it? I explored the cd and every time I try to run SP2 and I try to go around the "autorun" I keep getting the same error I explained above. Thanks, I would appreciate help.

I had a similar problem, except it insisted my kernel wasn't good. I had BootXP installed, so I uninstalled that and then SP2 installed without a hitch. I have heard of other similar problems involving the SP2 on cd, I'm not sure what other problems could be causing it.

Try installing it from Safe Mode... An added bonus is that it installs faster as well.

If that fails, do a repair install of XP, which preserves your original data and programs. Then run the XPSP2 disc.
