Haha.

You go and be that, then! :) More power to ya. I really like your cars. Keep up the good work.

Me. I'd love to tell you my racial and cultural decent, but I'm not allowed, because I'm not a minority and my ancestors didn't get enslaved or beat up in their history (unless you count the Roman occupation...but no one does)

Oh...did I mention that I have blond hair and blue eyes, and am male? How's about that for being the target of every reverse discrimination innuendo this side of the Atlantic? Oh well. Some people just have to suffer, I guess. What are you gonna do? I think I'll go have some tea with The Man and talk about the guilt we're supposed to feel. ;)

Oh ya... can we get back to bashing on p3rsion now?

i deal with high schoolers a lot...mostly asian. english/history/other humanities seem to be the subject of choice with more and more asians. of course, we still have a lot of math geeks but things are starting to balance out a bit.

That's not correct. You are including countries in Southwest Asia which are not typically considered Asian.

Southwest Asia is not considered Asian. It's usually considered Middle/Near Eastern.

By your logic, Canadians are American. So are Mexicans.

India is not Central Asia or Southwest Asia, it's considered South Asia. And yes, they are Asian.

You can't blame the "AZN"s for stealing the word Asian though. We stole the word "American." American's could technically be from any of the 2 American continents.

Yeah, it does suck. I'm asian but I can't do math, I can handle alcohol, don't smoke, not into blondes, don't care about how people see me and consider a car a form of transportation, nothing more. I think they're talking about pulling my asian status. I can't let it happen. I can NOT go back to paying full price for crab. :neartears :neartears

I have always wondered....do asian people have a problem being called "Orientals"?

There was a woman in some of my undergrad classes that would flip and say that is demeaning towards asians.

Why is it such a big deal? Is it something about being "lumped" into a group or is there some sinister former use of the word?

Mike_N_Ike

I've heard people say that 'oriental' refers to objects - like an oriental rug...while 'asian' is the correct term to refer to people.

I don't remember that always being the case...so how it got to be that way, I don't know.

Most asians I've met don't like being called oriental. It kinda falls in with the "They all look alike" thing. Asian culture has a long history, and many distinct people and cultures. And not all those cultures get along all the time, or desire to be grouped in with each other.

Well the word "asia" itself was invented by the Greeks to describe middle easterners, so I think we have perverted the original meaning a bit.
