My best friend just got a new computer, and since he now lives about 2000 miles away, playing online is about the only way we can play games together. We're searching for a game with the following characterics:

1. If it's an MMORPG, it can't be the kind that involves 80 hour weeks of playing, or the kind where everyone who has been playing for months just takes advantage of "spawn spots" or other such nonsense.

2. It should preferably cost as little as possible to play online (free would help!).

3. It should not be City of Heroes or Final Fantasy XI (I'm boycotting FF after X-2, which was a big steaming pile of poo).

4. It will hopefully have some sort of text chat involved, so that much trash may be talked while playing. And it should be easy to find each other on a server.

Using those constraints (I don't think I was too restrictive), sell me on your favorite game(s)...we don't really care about the genre.

W3 is old, but always fun. You 2 can work the ladder or play the custom games. Team up and own the competition or go head to head in group games. For custom maps, there is DOTA ver 5.68 and a new TOB (tides of blood) map is to be released. Both are fun 5v5 games. Better then official blizzard games IMO.

W3 has buddy lists, private games, chatrooms and chat during play.

Warhammer Dawn of War is fun. I'd get that over warcraft 3 right now, just because I like the sci-fi fantasy genre more than high fantasy genre.

Is Dawn of War a RTS or turn based?

You could always play some Java games on like Yahoo! or something like that where you'll be able to chat and play some Texas Hold'em.

That's always cool, then again good old stand bys like StarCraft and Diablo2 are always good for that stuff too.

I "hang out" with my friend by playing games too, since they live far away now. We mostly play Call of Duty, City of Heroes or Warcraft 3 (Custom game DOTA - Defense of the Ancients). They're all really fun.
