Anyone seen this title for PS2 yet?

If you took all the crazy sh*t that came out of Japan over the years and watched it on acid, you still wouldn't come up with a game as weird as this.

It's only $20 and kind of a rare find. The whole game is about the "king of the universe" accidentally smashing the sky and the stars are all gone. He sends you, his bite sized prince to gather junk on earth to recreate the stars and constellations.
He gives you a small katamari on your quest. Think of it like a gumball. You spend the level rolling around picking up small items, like dice, pencils, nail files, etc by rolling your little ball over them. In time, the ball gains mass and you're able to pick up larger stuff on the level, like fruits, cups, rolls of toilet paper, cans, etc. As your ball grows with stuff, your camera angle pans out so you can see more of the level at a time. If you hurry, you can grow it large enough to get people, houses, skyscrapers, etc. At the end of the level, if you meet the kings size limit, he lets you create a star with it.

It gets more interesting. Certain levels for constellations require special quests. The level for Cancer, you have to run around the level collecting as many crabs as you can find. Another level requires that you find the largest possible cow on the level and collect it. (But you can only collect one cow..it becomes more of a obstacle course as you make your way in and out of the cows...)

It's quite a trip, but I can't stand to play it more than a half hour or I start getting creeped out by the weird king and his "engrish" (http://www.engrish.com).

If you're looking for something different and kid friendly, this is definitly it. Just don't drop acid before playing.

I thought it was quite unique and fun. These types of games should be encouraged. Otherwise we'd get screwed with a bunch of FPS clones and poor RTS games.

:stupid:
Yeah, I should have said it's well worth the $20. I'm glad I bought something completely unique. I would have put it in "suckage" if I thought the game was a rip off.

so...other than the complete oddity of the story, is the game fun enough to hold your attention?

Yep. It's slowly addicting me. I just finished "Gemini" which requires you to roll up as many twins or "duplicates" as possible.

This game is very creative.

It's taking my co-workers over by storm :P I had this guy in my cube the other day going "Ooh, with my katamari I could pick up that pen, that cup, that box of tissues, that elephant, that ps2, that phone then slowly build up for your computer, screen, TV.. don't think I can get your desk and couch though .. hmmm"

Then proceeded to walk around thinking (out loud) of all the crap he could collect...

uh...wow...

I'd watch him in the next few days...and have the police on speed dial just in case...

on the bright side, good thing he's not addicted to Counter Strike ;)

It really does play with your head. I was watching a movie this weekend and the camera panned over a bunch of small trees. The idea of the katamari rolling over them and making that "plunk" sound went through my head and I started laughing.

Now I've got the theme music stuck in my head. Great.

Still not as weird as the Yoshinoya game, imo.

They've made a sequel. Anyone play it? It looks like it's getting high reviews.

Katamari is so fun. :) Haven't played the second one yet though.

(of course now I've got the theme song stuck in my head too)

I was so addicted to this game after my girlfriend introduced me to it. It's a crazy concept, but it works. Simple games are the funnest.
