Mammoth Lakes is also known as Long Valley. It is actually one very large volcanic caldera that has been active in the last 150 years. It is located on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada, practically on the other side of the Sierras from Yosemite.
There is excellent skiing on Mammoth Mountain - probably the best in California.

Devil's postpile is columnar basalt.
Basically lava/magna that cools under ideal conditions to form the pentagonal shape. Similiar to how when mud dries, like a dry lakebed, the mud dries(contracts) in 2 dimensions. With lava, it's a contraction caused by cooling rather than drying, and you get the contraction in 3 dimensions.

Other sites where you can see this include Pinnicles National Monument near Parkfield, CA (where we had a few earthquakes recently), and the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland. The Giant's Causeway looks really cool because it's along the shoreline and you get great visuals of the waves crashing on the basalt formations.

That's very interesting sizemic thanks for the knowledge. Mammoth looks inspirational. Were you able to camp out there or were you just there to hike?

I used to have a co-worker whose family had a wonderful cabin in Mammoth Lakes.
Ever since then I have wanted to try and buy a cabin there and just get away. Now if I just had $400k-$500k on me...

Shoot..that's how much Condos are going for up there.
Looked at some real estate booklets, decent sized cabins are in the 800-900k range.
OH MY GOD!
NOT NATURE!
GET IT AWAY FROM ME
*swipes at clothing* ACK! I think I've been infected!
Get it off of me! GET IT OFF!
