I picked it up on my desktop through automatic updates, but whenever I try to install it, it tells me that the file atapi.sys cannot be copied for some reason or another.
It gives the option to go on without copying it, but I'm a little bit hesitant to do so. If you just say to continue, will it just use the old atapi.sys...and is that a big deal?

Description
Several programs can cause this inability to backup atapi.sys when trying to install SP2. Here's the deal.
Directions
Multiple people are reporting that they are getting "atapi.sys" errors during the installation of xp sp2.
This error is caused by programs that create virtual hard drives on your system such as Daemon Tools and Alcohol.
If you see this error, cancel the installation and disable these programs. For me, turning off alcohol was enough. Other users have reported that they had to completely uninstall these types of programs before installing sp2.

Is it possible to uninstall SP2, or would that just be too simple? I'm starting to think that I'll just need to rebuild my whole system to wipe out all the crap I'm dealing with now (hence my thread about external drives needed).
Typical frickin Microsoft. They release SP2 because the original XP was too full of bugs, and now they find that SP2 is worse than the original was!

Sure, as long as you allowed it to create uninstall files when you installed it originally, it should show up on your 'add/remove software' list.
Also, not to be the MS whore, but many SP2 problems are due to poorly coded or insecure 3rd party apps, not MS.
