I finally got SP2 to install correctly but when I rebooted my machine, it can't load up to windows. It will crash while the Windows logo is there and then reboot and ask if I want to load in safe mode.

I can load it in safe mode - but I don't really know where to go from here. Help, anyone?

I'm having similar problems, so I can't help you Mike, but I will watch this thread to see if anyone else can help.

I think you are in serious trouble cheif. We have been posting that SP2 is terrible. But now that i have ranted. My only thought is that you pop in your windows disk and try to get a repair windows xp installation. Thats the only tip i can offer. Many of my clients have turned there machines into paper weights and i have had to reinstall windows... so if that works.. PLEASE DON"T DO SP2 !!!!

I have not had any problems installing SP2 to clean machines that were recently built. It seems to only have problems with computers that have all kinds of stuff installed on them already.

So you think that if I reinstall my OS and then go straight to windows update I should be able to avoid some of these problems?

I do not know how to deal with their problem, but I had no troubles with SP2. I did turn off the firewall and antivirus since I use Norton.

SP2 was designed to work under a clean install under the best case. If you do a clean install you will not have any problems unless you have hardware issues. If you read about all the SP2 problems they are always with computers that have been up and running for a while, never a clean install.

Have you tried a system restore to a date before you installed SP2?

no problems here with SP2. running stable as a rock.

thing is, i slipstreamed it with my original XP disc, and thats how i got it to install CLEANLY, its not really a universal option since a lot of machines already have files stored in it and cant just be fully reinstalled. waste of time.
i think the problem lies within installing it as an UPGRADE in most cases that come up. either that or a component/app/program in an existing machine has issues with SP2 altogether, or SP2 just didnt "clear" it.
i know, that was hardly a solution, but its more simply my 2cents...

hope you find a fix, since i may come across it one of these days - sure would help a lot.

Ended up doing that and I'm back to good again - thanks. Dunno if I want to try the upgrade again...

My set up is about a year and a half old but I try to keep it cleaned up. As far as my installation, I downloaded it directly from Microsoft shortly after it was released, saved it on my computer and then installed it from there. Like I said, no problems for me.
