Just read an interesting article:
http://www.wired.com/news/mac/0,2125,65323,00.html?tw=rss.TOP

"A Hawaiian company specializing in streaming video claims to have developed a $50 software emulator that allows a Windows PC to run Apple Computer's Mac OS X.

Maui X-Stream on Tuesday announced CherryOS, a virtual PC that mimics the hardware of a G4 Mac. The company said it is already working on a stand-alone version that cuts out Windows XP. A stand-alone version of CherryOS would allow OS X to run on a cheap commodity PC without the added expense of Microsoft's operating system -- provided the emulator works and Apple's lawyers ever allow it to see the light of day.

Available as a 7-MB download, the CherryOS software emulates a G4 processor and includes the chip's multimedia-boosting Velocity Engine, formerly known as AltiVec. It also features support for USB, FireWire and ethernet. It automatically detects hardware and network connections, the company said."

sounds interesting if it works. I would try it out. If they can eliminate the MSFT OS it would definately make things interesting. 20% loss is not too too bad, considering you could throw that thing on a pretty beastly machine.

Now that would be sweet. OS X on my dell. I wonder how long it will last before the Apple lawyers strike.

But as long as you have your copy before it's off the market, you will be okay. ;)

uhm...ok...isnt OS X a 64bit OS?

why would you want to run a 64bit OS on a 32bit platform? even if you put it on an Itanium system, or an AMD 64bit chipset, its still EMULATION (read:slow).

and actually this has already been done a couple years back. actually demo'd on TechTV. plenty of stuff to configure before you can do what essentially comes out as a slow emulation of the OS.

we'll see what happens. Apple will take them to the cleaners with this. and even if it does go thru, that 20% slower speed may not seem a lot, but in real world apps, its mighty slow.

Actually not quite 64bit yet. The current version of OS X, 10.3 is 32bit code with a few optimizations for the G5 (64bit cpu). The next version 10.4 will be fully 64bit. But yeah. . . ~80% of cpu power for emulating. . . riiight. If this were true I would think that video would actually show the emulator in action instead of static screens. My guess these chumps are just repackaging PearOS and trying to make a quick buck.

Actually Virtual PC was first made by Connectix and MS bought them out. There's also Bosch (sp?) that's free.

I heard this CherryOS thing was using PearPC code...

OS X is slow on Macs, imagine how slow it will be on a pc.
