I'm shopping around for anti-virus solutions here at work, and I've found really cheap versions of Symantec Professional, however, they are labeled "media licence." I assume this isn't a real licence? Can I even install this software or when I get the cd will I have to buy a key from Symantec for an additional fee?

I'm so dumb when it comes to actually paying for software.

That's a weird description, since 'media' & 'license' are generally two different items. Normally if you're buying a bunch of licenses, you just buy a bunch of 'paper' licenses and one 'media kit' which is a copy of the software without a license.

Just give them a call & tell them how many machines you need to protect & they'll tell you what you need to buy.

AVG rocks http://www.grisoft.com/

I use it mainly because for home users its free http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/ plus they actually keep their database updated quite frequently, ie couple times a week there's an update. Plus its not as obtrusive of a program as norton has become these days. Worth a look imo.

About your question though, media license means just that. You get the media and a license. There are also ways for companies to buy just licenses if they don't want to pay extra for the media. You're making it sound more complicated than it really is. I suppose it'd make more sense to you if it said, "file and crack" eh?

If you buy Norton and you're maintaining a lot of workstations, make sure you get the enterprise version. The Enterprise Control Center thingy let's you do client install rollouts all at once from one computer.

But going back to your question, I agree with Jeff. Just give the company a call and describe what your situation is (how many computers, etc) and let them figure it out.

I use avast.com for my antivirus needs.

I would never use Norton, its a ram hog and only has a year of free updates. Symantec Pro is efficient and lifetime updates.
