There's leaked Half life 2 source codes which after compilation is somewhat playable. It'll be released Nov 18th i think so it's not that long before you can get a copy. The new GTA San adreas leaked before its Oct 28th release though, the entire game was leaked...

I don't know what your budget is... but I'm selling an X800 I bought about a month ago. Check out this thread for more information

X800 For Sale (http://www.gotapex.com/forums/showthread.php?t=80201)

I'm selling cuz it's not compatible with the BIOS on my Dell 8250, the issues been documented with Dell but they're not gonna do squat about it.

Shoot me a PM if you're interested. I'm using the same card at work and it runs great, which really bums me out that I can't use it at home.

Anyway... let me know.

If you're having so much problem with the Dell motherboard, why don't you swap it out and keep the card? Listening to your story, I'm just thankful the SC400 runs the x800 fine.

Thought about it, but with how cheap systems are nowadays. It's almost not worth it to throw down the dollars for a new mobo, etc etc....

I figure I'd just wait for a good deal on the 6800 which I know works fine with my 8200... still looking.. =)

It's coming out tomorrow!

Should I even attempt to buy/play it?
AMD 2500+
512MB PC3200 RAM
128MB Radeon 9500Pro unlocked

I play on getting a new CPU, adding another 512MB of RAM, and getting a $400 video card in 2 months, but is it worth buying it now... in other words, even playable?

Cantacuzene
11-15-2004, 11:38 AM
Ski, your system should handle it fine on the dx8.1 path. 1024x768 with some eye candy should be above 60fps for you no problem.

Anyone know if this will be released at midnight?

I think the more important question is whether the steam authentication servers will be activated tonight at midnight.

Cause it doesn't matter if you have the game or not, you still need to authenticate.

So I take it there will be an option for DX8.1 or DX9.0+ to install? Or should I uninstall DX9?

I was only able to play doom at 30fps with 800x600 medium detail

Memo
11-15-2004, 03:00 PM
In the game you can choose whether to utilize dx9 or dx8

Cantacuzene
11-15-2004, 03:02 PM
The authentication servers will turn on at midnight. And this game is less system taxing than doom3. I really doubt they will be that flooded. The servers will be cpu overloaded, but there will be plenty of bandwidth.

Memo
11-15-2004, 03:27 PM
They were flooded pretty hard when HL2 pre-loading started...and only 78% of the data is included on the CDs. I'm guessing our pre-load is similar.

DaFunkyUnit
11-15-2004, 03:34 PM
can someone explain how this whole authentication thing works?

so I download and install Steam. then, via Steam, I send them CC info and whatnot and this allows me to download the game files. However, to install the game, I need to authenticate it (kinda like how M$ makes you authenticate XP). is that how it goes?

now, what if I want to (re)install the game on a (different) machine? then what? can I put the game setup files on a CD, just in case some cataclysmic (sp) disaster befalls on my computer and I lose my data, I don't lose my game and have to shell out another $50+ ?

and what about the mods that are promised to come with HL2 if you buy from Steam (ie. Day of Defeat). does it work the same way with mods, being that you download the setup files via Steam, then authenticate upon installation? again, what if I want to (re)install on a (different) comp?

Memo
11-15-2004, 10:20 PM
The authentication is only a problem because the game hasn't been released yet. So you have the game on your system but it's basically encrypted. In the future you will be able to download it and not need to necessarily 'authenticate' it.

At least that's my understanding. In the past all games are just tied to your steam account (including CS:Source). So I can log on anywhere on any machine and use my steam account to play the games that I paid for on that account.

Edit:

BTW, Anyone waiting up for its release?

Been playing it for like 15 minutes now. Pretty cool! Graphics are really good. Although, the textures on the random NPCs faces not so good compared to other ones like the main NPCs. Not a big deal though. The game is much more taxing on the system that Counter-Strike:Soruce, while I get a good 85 fps in CS:S at 1600x1200 my frames were dropping and staying in the 18-30 fps in HL2 during certain areas. The game's pretty exciting though!

For those of y'all worried with the lower end systems, I'd say try it out. Several of my friends with lower end systems say the game runs pretty well on their machines. You have to turn off some of the bells and whistles but it still is a good looking game.

Oh calm down :P

You don't have to be logged into Steam to play HL2. You can run Steam in "Offline Mode" if it can't connect. I just tried it out, works fine.

Now, you have to go through Steam to launch HL2, but you don't need to actually be connected and log in for it.

I dont think they would make a game that can't be played offline. Cause wouldn't that hurt many many people that didn't have a fast connection to get the extra info? Just seems like bad marketing if that were the case. Cause there are still some people "gasp" that dont have internet or reliable internet.

You HAVE TO have internet to play the game. There's no other way to authenticate after install. And yes it seems very stupid to make a game like this but that's the reason people are complaining a lot. Because they spent their $50 and can't play.

Yeah, I was able to happilly play HL2 without having a connection, short of physically pulling the plug.

I've heard of some people having problems with playing Offline if they didn't install CS:Source, but since I just installed the whole shebang I got no probs on my side.

Bn playing for a couple of days (serious game playing) and now am in the Ravenholm sequence. Seems as though I am going arround and arround, right now I am on the flat red tile rooftop with a chair and ammo as well as life modules. Been here for quite awhile and don't know exactly where to go next. Have tried most everything, even backtracking but haven't found anything new. This has been a long sequence and not near as much fun as the airboat, especially after they installed the laser gun and bunch more HP in the engine. I really enjoyed that sequence. Overall I am enjoying this game as much as the original HL. As I remember there were area like this in the original game.

I have made it through the dune buggy sequence, that was quite a ride.
I am now in the prison. This looks like it may be a long sequence getting though this.
This is a superior game IMO, just what I expected from the the makers of HL original. I played that game through several times. Probably will play this one over too.
I was throughly disappointed in Unreal 2. That did not last but a few days and it was done. Maybe they could bring out a Unreal 3 and really do a good thing with it.

Okay so I know I'm way behind here but do they sell CS:Source at retailers? Or is it another one of those things where you just buy HL2 and have to download Source? I'd be giving it as a gift, so it'd be better if I could just buy CSS for the guy so he could avoid the download.

It is NOT sold seperately, but I'm pretty sure it's included on the HL2 installation.

You need HL2 to run the game. I think it's even included on the 5 disc set that comes with HL2 :thumb:

correct me if im wrong, but i dont think you need HL2 to play cs source. my friend dld cs source and was playing it before HL2 even came out. it wasnt beta either, it was the final version.

you need to purchase HL2 (at the time being) to play CS:Source. but you DON'T need to INSTALL HL2 to play CS:Source.

i don't know if they are going to release CS:Source as a stand-alone retail package... i'll leave that for somebody else

They had released it for people who pre-bought HL2.

Man the multiplayer for HL2 rocks. Me and the roommates played a good six hour session Friday night. The two included maps were great. I downloaded the 50 map community map pack but pretty much all of them sucked a lot. I can't wait for good maps to get released or for Valve to make some more for us.

Okay so to confirm what you guys were saying, EBGames didn't sell CSS separately, but it does come with HL2. Hope my friend enjoys it. I couldn't play it myself even if I wanted to; my computer's way too low-end.

You'd be surprised. The 2nd most popular card among Half Life 2 users is a GeForce 4 MX series... bottom shelf, year and a half to 2 years old.

Perhaps you'd be surprised. GeForce 2 here. On a 1.7 GHz desktop with 512 RAM.

Right I could probably play marginally if I replaced the video card, but no PC games really scream out at me at this point. Rather than drop a couple hundred on a video card, I'm going to wait until I can replace the whole rig.

Alright guys, quick question, I'm not really big into gaming, but my buddy who isn't either said this is one to try. Trouble is I've sold all my desktops, and I'm now using a laptop for all my computer needs. Centrino 1.8 w/ 32mb ATI (IIRC) video card. Is it a waste to even try running it on the laptop?

no, and while you guys have been talking about deathmatch mods, does anyone know where i could get a dm mod for cs 1.5(play on lan with bots) or an amx mod for 1.5?(it would be fun to slap and bury the bots lol)
