My step father is having his 60th birthday next month and we are at a loss of what to get him. He is a relatively down to earth individual, plays a lot of poker, speaks 8 foreign languages fluently (including chinese and japanese), very intellectual (doctorate in chinese literature), and is a good guy. The problem is simply that no one can figure out what to get him, including my mother and his children. He likes to gamble, watch older movies, used to smoke quality cigars, fish, etc.

I showed him this site a long time ago and he sometimes checks it although I dont know if he ever found the forums, so I wont say what his kids decided to get him or the 2 things my mother and I have been kicking around lately. Unfortunately, both of those things are quite expensive and we are still trying to come up with other ideas.

Technologically, he isnt anywhere near the cutting edge, but he wouldnt really ever have a need for an Ipod or media player. They already have a quality home theater (thanks to me/my grandmom for the receiver and all of us for the dvd player). The TV isnt anything special just a 36" Panasonic that was bought before HD capability was even out here. So the TV or the speakers are the only parts that should be upgraded. Frankly though he was reluctant to even get the hometheater in the first place which is why I ended up getting it for them, but he loves it now.

I really dont have very many ideas.....so maybe others can come up with something novel that we havent thought of. As for money, try to keep it reasonable.

Thanks.

does he have a good humidor?

cigar smokers always appreciate cigars, if you know what he likes.

nice cigar ashtray?

does he drink whiskey? maybe a cigar case/flask.

perhaps a pipe/tobacco?

casino quality poker chips? perhaps customized? (there's a place that will do custom chips for about $1 each)

BI, that's a great idea i think. if someone likes to play poker at home with friends, the nice clay chips are really great. they're not cheap, so i think that would a be a great gift.
