My desktop (192.168.2.12 - onboard ASUS LAN adapter) and laptop (192.168.2.15 - Netgear MA401 802.11b) can't "see" each other in My Network Places.

Both:
+ have folders shared
+ are in workgroup "MSHOME"
+ have functional internet access (send/receives OK in general)

Desktop (XP Pro) CAN ping laptop
Laptop (2000) CANNOT ping desktop :(
Router is a Microsoft® Broadband Networking Wireless Base Station (http://www.microsoft.com/products/info/product.aspx?view=22&pcid=2b0d9d1a-2c46-4106-8072-5408a8a0e4a5&type=ovr)

What could be the ish? I pulled the laptop wireless card that was in a Windows 98 laptop and put it in this new laptop running 2000. As far as I know, it's not the card, because it's worked in the past., and read the lines in the parentheses below to see why it's probably the network).

(On an unrelated note, my main Laptop (laptop #2) cannot "see" my desktop either, and that one's running XP Pro... so generally, none of my LAN computers can see each other!!)

Any help on this one?

I turned off the Router firewall (does it need to be?)

I have ZoneAlarm on default settings on the desktop. (is this the problem?) this might make sense, since sharing stopped working around the time I installed ZoneAlarm on my main laptop and desktop...

no no no, don't turn off the router firewall!
but do try turning off zonealarm and the windows firewall. (or instead of turning off, allow the ports needed for file sharing)

ok ok! :)

Where might I find the port numbers, and do you "allow" them in zonealarm i take it?

Sounds to me like ZoneAlarm is your culprit here...

For ZA, you probably need to set it into "learning/prompt" mode and then try to connect... Either that or figure out how to make it allow the internal communications from your inside IP addresses.

It's been so long since I've done it... so I really don't remember how off the top of my head, but I do know that it can be done. :D

This is why I like Sygate Personal Firewall over ZA. One click allows the whole "Network Neighborhood" access without hassle...
