So I've finally decided it's time to get someone started with digital photography, and I need to find a camera (preferrably under $400).

I've mostly purchased mid-range cameras (such as my Olympus C-740 Ultra Zoom), and don't really know what's out there for the basic shutterbug. Ease of use, a zoom lens (3x would be fine), and 3-megapixels are required. Macro would be a nice asset as well. Finally, it would be nice if the camera took Compactflash, seeing as how this person's printer already has a built-in CF reader.

Any recommendations before I head out and see what's out there?

(Only camera I know about would be the Canon Powershot A75 (and I think that might be overkill).

If a low zoom is fine, go for the Canon S series, with the S410 being the best choice. It's very easy to use, takes great pictures. But the only problem is a small zoom.

Why not the A75? It's very cheap (~175 at amazon and other places) and meets all the criteria you have. Cheap CF is going to run you another ~20/30 bucks, and the Canon accessories kit will run 50 tops. So at around 250, you have the complete package along with slipcase and rechargeable battery/charger.

Sounds like a killer deal to me.

Well, after getting quite a few recommendations for the Canon Powershot A75, I went and ordered one.

Thanks for the recommendations guys. :)
