Why are they giving this free software, what are they getting in return?

Read the fine print, works free for a year then you need to renew at the current rate. They're hoping you will.

They're trying to break into a market already dominated by others. They're taking the Microsoft route of giving it away free for now & charging later for it.

They do it because they HAVE to. Every year one can find Symantec’s Norton SystemWorks (which includes anti-virus) and Personal Firewall for Free-after-rebate (FAR) at numerous places. I got the 2004 SystemWorks/Personal Firewall/Anti-Spam bundle FAR on Black Friday last year at BestBuy. I’ve already gotten SystemWorks 2005 FAR. McAfee (which sucks IMHO) does the same thing. It’s the only way they can break into the market when the competition also offers free software to the savvy consumer.
