XBox all the way.
Games run better, the graphics are top notch, you get much more hardware for the $ that you pay. Plus when/if you mod your XBox, it is by far the most superior all-in-one multimedia entertainment system for under $200.

DaFunkyUnit is right, and Halo 2, how can you not buy halo 2?

I would've said PS2....until I played this year's EA sports games. The games take SO much longer to load on a PS2 than an XBox.
Plus, if you don't use it to watch DVDs, you'll save money on accessories, since you won't need a memory card (or cards, really...I don't think you can only have one for PS2).
Xbox. For the multiplatform games, Xbox always has the best version. Always slightly better graphics, and in my opinion the best controller out there (Microsoft S controller). The hard drive is also nice, lets you use your MP3s as the soundtracks for some games, and eliminates the need for memory cards (unless you want to transport data to someone else's box).
The only advantage PS2 has (and it is a large one) is the extensive game library of PS2 exclusives (the best of which are the big name RPGs like Final Fantasy). Xbox is putting up some powerhouse exclusives of its own though (Halo 2, Fable, Halo), so I think that's a wash unless you're an RPG maniac.
As an Xbox owner, I would never trade mine in for a PS2. In contrast, a friend of mine is a PS2 owner that wishes it would turn into an Xbox.

Another note, xbox live is great. The fact that the xbox comes with the HD and network adapater, and xbox live only costs 50$ a year or so. It is great, i know my brother(kacarp) and I use live to play each other in madden. Also, once our dad gets around to getting broadband we will all be playing madden on live against each other.
Since EA supports live now, I see no reason why not to go with live, add in downloadable content for a lot of games(sometimes have to pay) and halo2 on live.......
Scratch all that I just said, Halo 2 + xbox live = Must buy

Another couple of reasons why you should go X-box if anything at all.
1) Microsoft is going to sell an add on which allows you to use it as a Media Center Extender...supposed to run about $79. This will allow you to access your media center files on your tv (if you have MC 2005..not sure if it works with the older platforms/xp)
2) Sony's PS2 replacement is on the horizon and will play Blue Ray Dvds -- Its due out next year. This is also the reason why they just deployed the slim version of the PS2. Sony feels that current PS2 users will upgrade asap to the newer system for the lastest games/technology.
3) That aside, the PS2 is a much older design.....the game cube and X-box both have better display capabilities. The ps2 has the benefit of the largest library and greater infiltration due to when it was released.
Personally, I have a GC and PS2. Never bought an X-box although given the right price I would probably pick one up...mostly because Halo and Halo2 look really good.

yup...i ended up getting the xbox b/c costco had a better bundle deal that came with the dvd encoder. and i needed a dvd player at the time. now, despite all the xbox titles out (some i've never even heard of before) i have to admit that PS2 has the better collection (esp when you go game shopping and look at the greatest hits collection)
however, i'm still very happy with my choice, and i can't wait for halo2!!!
XBox...You can play Halo for the next couple weeks...and then play Halo 2 :)
More like you can play Halo for 4 days before the sequel hits... not that it doesn't have replay value, but Halo 2 will own your free time if you buy extra controllers and have some buddies around (or if you buy Live).
In response to UFC's point #2 about the PS3 coming soon... (That is what you meant right? The new blue ray machine is the 3 right?) I thought Xbox Next/Xbox 2 whatever they decide to call it is supposed to come out around the same time, late 05 or early 06. Maybe I'm mistaken.

I like my PS2 specifically for Gran Turismo. Can't wait for GT4. ON the flipside, an Xbox is tempting because I also get super great discounts with HP on Microsoft Products ( We have Microsoft EPP discounts on X-box games, accessories, etc)

In a simular boat. I am content with my NES, still runs. I think I would still get a X-BOX if I got a console again. Although not all teh games are there for it, the graphics are awsome, shorter load times, has a hard drive. Only reason i would buy a PS2 is for GT4, game looks friggin sweet.

you know...i find it really interesting how when the Xbox first came out, people were deriding it and supporting the PS2. People wanted PS2s in their cars, not xboxes. You have to admit no matter how much you hate Microsoft, they've done an AMAZING job at promoting the Xbox into what it is now.
I'm impressed. :)

if you are waiting for GT4, maybe you should also take a look at Forza Motorsport for Xbox. I've read that it might be better.

I have frequently thought about this too...
I would get a PS2.
Most of the games (of the type that I play) on the XBox are also on the PC, and play and look better on the PC. Squaresoft games (Kingdom Hearts, FF10,X) are only available on the PS2.

I can't tell if you are being serious. Do you know how many people on this forum use bad grammar, spelling and ebonics as a part of their regular conversations? I think a hyphen is the least of our worried. :)
BUt then again, if it drives you insane, maybe its best for all of us to never say ex box again. :)
I have an xbox thats been umm, souped up... and oh man, i love it love it love it... Halo 2 is gonna own me though.

lol I was serious maarchk :( You know how some things just get on your nerves, that one is. Probably from the years of my douchebag friends trashing on it and always spelling it out as X-Box, now they have seen the light and bought an xbox.
With the PS3, most likely it won't be out till 2006, the xbox next or X2 or xbox2 will hit before the ps3, most likely around november 15th 2005. I believe that is the 4 year annie of the xbox.

Comparing the PS2 and the XBox on performance is trying to compare a honda civic vs a ferrari ;)
That said, when I bought my console I got an XBox simply because I liked the power it had to offer and to me that translated into more future titles. Until I realized that a LOT of the games that I wanted to play are exclusives on the PS2 .. so about a month later I went and picked up a PS2 :) The XBox/PS2 combo serves me very well indeed :)
XBox has lots of nice features and future things that MS wants to make out of it.. but for me at the end of the day I wanna play games a friggin HEAP of them. If you're like me (wanna play a ton of games), the PS2 will make you much MUCH happier :P
Xbox games: Technically superior games (hell they got more technology to take advantage of)
PS2: Hell-load of games. If you don't believe me, go to any games store and compare the PS2 selection vs XBox selection ;)
[EDIT] : Btw, Halo ... worst game I have played in years. When I bought my XBox I got that guy on a very high recommendation. Horrible game. If your lead game designer says that your game has 30 seconds of fun repeated over and over, you've got problems ;)

HOw is Halo the worst game?? If you play Xbox live, I doubt its boring...
Halo the worst game you've played? Do you only play solo or something? Multiplayer is awesome, especially if you hook up 2 boxes for 8-player, or 4 boxes for 16-player... it's the best. Even 4-player is great.
Delta: I'd definitely get Halo 2. If you like action RPGs at all I'd pick up Fable... very fun being a good character and even more fun being an evil character (decapitate a villager and then kick the head around haha). Of course there's the multi-platform sports games (EA and ESPN both put out solid lines of games) for every sport you could possibly want. As for other good Xbox exclusives... hm... Dead Or Alive Ultimate maybe? There's not very many Xbox exclusives to be quite frank (but they are quality, like Halo and Fable).

Yeah, I was playing the single-player campaign. When it comes to FPS' I'd rather play on the PC .. I find FPS console controls to be exceedingly frustrating :P
Oh, and Ninja Gaiden was an AWESOME game :) /me hugs Ninja Gaiden

I have another thought....
way back in day, I bought my PS (1) because I could modify it-and I like that idea. I hear alot about modifying the XBOX, but PS2 mods have been around for a lot longer.
So, which console has the most for would-be hackers and modders?

Xbox
exactly. The hard drive makes all the difference. Yes the PS2 has a hard drive, but no one has been able to get anything going with that...
I would not compare specs between the xbox and ps2. What you should care about are what games you want to play. If you want to play Final Fantasy X-2, Gran Turismo 4, Grand Theft Auto San Andreas (this year :)), Metal Gear Solid 3, etc then get a PS2.
If you want to play Halo 2, Forza Motorsport, and Jade Empire, get a Xbox.
If you want to play Mario Party 6, Metroid Prime 2, Star Fox Assault, Mario Tennis, Odama, Zelda and Fire Emblem, then get a Cube.
It's really all about the games. I've said it a 1000 times, and i'll keep saying it. Those who favor one console over another because it's "l33t" or something are just fanboys.

Or you could pay ~$50 for a modchip (although i burned my own for next to nothing 3+ years ago), install XBox Media Center on your 120+GB upgraded hard drive and dump any files (mp3, avi, ogg, mpeg, divx, xvid, etc.) you want to play on it. Or if you don't like that, just stream them from your desktop.
I actually just installed a modchip in my friends xbox over the weekend in a little under 2 hours (I'm a little rusty, its been a while). While many use modchips for illegally copying/playing games, i probably use it 90% of the time for media reasons. And if you DO decide to put your games on it (you can either play off DVD-R's or the hard drive) they'll load a hell of a lot faster due to the hard drives speed.

1. I think Xecuter3 is currently the best chip (thats what i got my friend)
2. www.xboxmediacenter.de (http://www.xboxmediacenter.de) is the official website for it, but you can't find the program on there for reasons i won't go into. Basically everthing you could ever want for the xbox can be found on irc in the #xbins channel
3. Yes, Xecuter comes with a front panel that lets you do things like turn off the mod chip, and has lights for LAN and HDD
www.xbox-scene.com (http://www.xbox-scene.com) as was posted above is the best source for any information you could want.

i was wondering this same question a month and a half ago when i was in the market for a console, and i settled on the ps2. i think gear02's got it right when he says it's mainly about the games.
i'd heard great things about the capabilities of the xbox, but being that i'm more of an RPGer, ps2 was the one for me. i've never been a Halo-type game player, and nothing else i've played on xbox has impressed me sufficiently enought to pull me away from ps2's extensive library (right now i'm playing Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne; thoroughly addicted).
PLUS, the bestbuy where i bought it will let me bring it back when the ps3 comes out about 14 months from now and give me the full $150 credit towards the ps3. so, all in all, a better deal for me.

the new ps2 is really hard to install the mod chip on... xbox is easy. and here's another vote for halo/halo2 being the bestest games on the planet.
that said, i have been really unexcited by this generation of consoles. the last one i got my panties in a bunch about was the nintendo64. i think the next generation ps3/vbox2/etc is going to be really exciting, tho, so i am skipping this generation and will buy a new platform in a few years.
if it wasn't for the fact that, in true nintendo style, the DS has only about 20 games out right now, i'd really go with a DS. i got stuck in EBgames for about 3 hours total yesterday, and after parking my kids in front of the ps2 to play basketball, i stuck my nose in a ds and played metroid... it's pretty nifty, and portable is awfully nice.

Really Jon? My opinion was that the graphics levels from high to low are like this:
1. Xbox
2. PS2
3. Gamecube
But that's my opinion...
anyways.. My friend has the X3 (Xecuter) chip and it is GREAT. Allows you to do lots of stuff on the Xbox that you can't do normally. You can set up an FTP and transfer files to your Xbox from your computer, and it has the switch on the front of it to turn it off so you can play Xbox live. BUT I heard that even if you change out the HDD or the DVD-Rom drive for something that isn't standard, that Microsoft can still detect it and ban you. Not sure if it is true tho.
