It checks out each HD on boot-up. Does anyone know what might be causing this? The drives have both been checked without defect. Is there some dopey XP setting creating this wait each time I boot-up this computer?

Thanks!

Do you let it finish or just interrupt it?

I walk away and let it run.

Is XP shutting down properly, or is it encountering errors on shutdown? I recall XP wanting to check the disk on startup when the shutdown doesn't behave...

Try setting it up to run a thorough scan on the drive on next startup and let it run through. Most of the time this takes care of it. Besides this I have not found a solution either.

It shuts down fine. No reboots, no errors. I'll try to reun a thorough within XP and see if that settles it down.

If not you are in the same boat as me. The two I am referring to shut down and don't give any errors. The one thing I have not tried to run was a Defrag.

Do you have either a USB drive, a second portable HDD, or other MP3 devices such as an iPod connected to the computer constantly? Anything that's connected to your computer that may be assigned a drive letter upon startup may trigger those things.

If you've got those connected, try disconnecting what's there and rebooting. Also next time when it runs note the drive letter. If it's your main HDD, then I guess there may be further issues than I am guessing here.
