Replay TV as Recorder

There is a deal for a new Replay TV for around $100 before rebate. The rebate requires activation.
If I bought the unit and don't apply for the rebate (no activation), can it be used as a recorder only without any of the other features.

If you don't activate it, it becomes a doorstop. I've had mone for about three months now and it is great. Even my wife the skeptic is a convert.
