Dell hooked my computer up with 90 days free McAfee, but it is expiring in a week.
What should I get to replace it?

TIA :)

If you're going to pay for it, Norton is my favorite. You can get Norton Internet Security (Firewall & Anti-virus) for about $70, or seperately for $50 each. Your best bet, however, is probably Norton SystemWorks, which you can usually find really cheap or even free after rebate. However, I'd only install the firewall & antivirus from that package. Don't bother with any of the other tools - they're just as likely to break your computer as help it.

If you're looking for free software, you can use the firewall in WinXP SP2. Panda (http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/) and TrendMicro (http://housecall.trendmicro.com/) both offer free on-line scanning, and AVG (http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_index.php) offers a free installable scanner.

Yeah, I like Norton. You could install a freebie if you're cheap. My favorite free AV software is EZ Armor (http://www.my-etrust.com/microsoft/) from Computer Associates. I've put it on several friend's computers and never had a virus get through.

I guess if I were in your shoes, I'd install the free stuff, then sometime in the next year pick up a free-after-rebate copy of Norton.

Best deal on that right now is at Comp USA- Norton Systemworks/ Norton FIrewall twin pack only $9.99 after rebates. It shows out of stock on line, but you may check your local store. This includes an upgrade rebate but you can qualify for that on an OEM pre-installed version by printing your about/help page. Check the rebate information link in the ad for more information. Just SystemWorks does not include the Firewall by itself, but Internet Security does. I use some of the other features, but their GoBack caused problems for me. Link: http://www.compusa.com/adproducts/product_info.asp?product_code=315337&pfp=ADPRODUCTS

There are often good rebate offers on Norton.

How about Panda anti-virus? I heard good thing about it. I don't use software firewall since I use the router PAT.

thanks, but the reviews scare me :|
i don't want all my resources hogged, or is that a given with any virus security software?

Here's what I run, FWIW:

AdAware, SpyBot, Javacool Spyware Blaster, AVG anti-virus, Sygate Personal Firewall, Hardware Firewall.

It's a little more trouble to keep updated, but the price is right, and I have never had a problem. None of this stuff hogs resources either.

When I set a machine up for somebody, I install all of this and them make a "Maintenance" folder on their desktop with shortcuts to all these apps. I then take 15 minutes to walk through how to use and update each program.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorials.html has tutorials for these apps as well. I generally put links to them in the "Maintenance" folder too.

It's a given. Any scanner running on top of the OS will slow things down, but it should't be noticable if you have a decent machine (like a Pentium 4 or even fast P-III). The only way to avoid this is to install a hardware firewall, but those are pricey (like $200-400).

Personally I like AVG and I use it on all my systems, it's done a good job clamping down on wayward virii that inhabit some webpages.

I'm using Panda Titanium AV 2004. I was using Norton AV 2004 until few months ago until my colleague's computer got a virus WHILE using NAV 2004. It was one of those email sending virus, but norton couldn't pick out the virus even though the virus definition was updated to the latest one. I used the free active scan on Panda's website, and it picked it right out and disinfected it too. So I've been using panda AV ever since then.

that's just my two cents

It's great. McAfee didn't even find the infamous Sasser virus on my computer. So I downloaded Trend Micro's PcCillin for the 30 day trial. It picked it up immediately. I plan on buying it next week.
