Yeah, I guess the DS is going to be a hot toy this xmas.
Something about handhelds just turns me off. Replacing batteries seems like flushing money down the toilet, and it's never quite up to par with console gaming.

Thats why they have switched over to a lithium ion rechargable batterie pack

oh man...gotta get me one of those....maybe...any opinions on this Nintendo DS????
Opinions on the DS... well considering I'm not DS-educated, I'll just give my unsolicited opinion on Nintendo in general. Good hardware design, but ever since the PS1-N64-DC years, it's lacked the third-party software support of Sony. That wouldn't be a problem, except Nintendo's [first-party] games are often simple and childish because their target demographic is younger than that of Microsoft and Sony. That's why the Gamecube is a laughing stock. Show me a Nintendo-published series as good as Gran Turismo and Final Fantasy (Sony) or Halo (Microsoft).
The DS will be a hot item, but keep in mind that Sony has a new handheld on the way too, the PSP (PlayStation Portable I believe).

Yeah, the psp is going to cost a left nut and use a truck load of batteries to work for about 20 min, and although there may be games ported to it, you can't play all the old games you have for GB/A/SP

I played with one the other day at Target. It's very fast (I was playing some first-person shooter, Metroid?) Like all Game Boy systems, the screen is too dark, but looks like it would be nice when played at the right angle (the display at Target was set up too low for me.) The touchscreen membrane over the lower screen makes it look kind of cloudy. I didn't like that.

Is it backlit?
Yeah no kidding, enough with the sony fanboy bs. Im sure people can make up their own minds.Look chump, I actually don't even like Sony. Just presenting my opinion on Nintendo, which I feel has become a very kid-focused company. They just keep pushing Pokemon titles. They're a DISTANT third in the three-system console race, and to this point they've had almost no competition in the handheld market.

I agree, even though I'm totally rooting for Nintendo I hope they wake up and stop making so many hardcore kiddie games. The last real handheld competition they had was the game gear and that was a billion years ago, if they don't shape up I see bad things in the future :(
PSP is looking awesome but I think with Sony pushing their damned memory stick instead of something like CF will set them back a ways. :dead:

Is it backlit?Yeah, but the angle of viewing seems to be optimized for about 12" from your face, not down around my waist like the demo unit at Target.

Testy. Looks like someone's not getting any. But let me learn you all something. While its true that Nintendo does not have the volume the other 2 monopolists do, they make more actual dollars profit than both of them, ensuring Nintendo will stay in the video game business for a long time to come. Sometimes it really is quality over quantity. Now explain to me again how I am a chump for trying to keep someone's misguided opinions off of a deals page?
And for the record, I thought this DS thing was gonna fail horribly, much to gimmicky. But you've gotta hand it to them, they really put a lot of thought into it and it shows. And judging by the sales figures so far, it looks like Nintendo is going to once again crush another handheld opponent. Sony dropped the ball on this one. When are these companies gonna realize I dont want an all in one device at home or in my hand, I want a damn gaming system. How many people actually use their xbox/ps2 as their primary dvd system? Give me a break.
