View Full Version : Stupid Advertising Slogans

so i was watching TV this afternoon, and i was extremely annoyed by some of the advertising slogans.

for example, chrysler's "inspiration comes standard" has to be one of the most obnoxious, trying-to-be-touchy-feely-and-moving slogans ever.

but even worse is nissan:
"everything we touch we shift, and everything we shift we try to make better."

ok, first of all, it's too freaking long, with like subjunctive clauses and complex logical relationships. secondly, why say we "try" to make better? that makes no sense! if i'm going to buy your product, i certainly don't want an ambivilent slogan that talks about how you're trying to make it better.

i just don't understand who came up with that and convinced their ad agency it was a good idea.

maybe that will be my new sig:
whitak: every thread that i read, i carefully consider whether i should post a reply, and if i decide to post a reply, i certainly attempt to write a reply that is intelligent, logical, and adds something to the conversation.

now isn't that a damn good slogan?

GAM: please, don't move this to the auto forum. it's about advertising, not cars. ;)

You know what I hate? Those loan/credit card/auto commericals for people with bad credit. They always things like "Get the credit you deserve" or "You work hard, you deserve a loan..."

Bull. You screwed up your credit rating by not paying your bills. You deserve exactly what you have: nothing. Perhaps instead of going deeper into debt you should work hard and pay cash for something you can afford.

yeah, those are pretty pathetic as well. i guess more than the entitlement issue, i find annoying the fact that if they were being honest, they would say, "you DESERVE to get screwed over with our extremely high interest rates and terrible loan terms. come to us baby -- we're your only choice!"

"its not more than you need, its more than you're used to"

or how about

"Whats in YOUR wallet?"

ooh, or how about (i'm not too sure about this one)

"Be bold, be meaty, BE FRANK!"

or

"Grab life by the horns."

I really hate McD's "I'm lovin' it" slogan.

But now that I think about...all of the slogans we seem to hate..we actually know.

"No reasonable offer refused".

Hello? Acceptance typically implies the offer was reasonable.

An Army of One - The biggest load of Bulls**t in marketing today. If there was ever an organization whose values are diametrically opposed to individual thought and action its the military.

I really hate McD's "I'm lovin' it" slogan.

My wife and I have a great slogan for McD's:

When you're too tired to cook...

There's always McDonalds :)

we frequently find ourselves saying that when we are on the road and need to eat...well there's always McDonalds...

Hehe, I love that there are people who get mad at commercials as much as I do.

How about that commercial where there are a bunch of cars moving around a dance floor and then another car drives in all wild (I can't remember which car it is, Lexus maybe?) and the slogan goes "Party's over". wtf? so you mean to say that your car is a party pooper?! Why not say "Now the party can begin" or something to that effect??

man that is another one! i'm so glad you mentioned that one. i had the same dumbfounded reaction when i saw that commercial. the message seems to be "you were having fun, but now we designed this ass-ugly car and so the fun is over." not the message i want attached to my car.

why didn't they say something like "now the real party is starting"?

I remeber seeing a chevy ad for the blazer in a magazine, "Like a rock" was the ad, trouble was the blazer was replacing a lifeboat on a large ship.

Don't rocks sink? :hmm:

This is kind of a tangent, because the commercials I hate don't always have a unifying slogan... but I think I hate about 30% of all commercials.

Those Coca-cola C2 commercials make me mad. People dancing around and stuff because it has half the calories or whatever. The slogan for that should be "C2. Because I'm a tool." For that matter, I don't like the Adrian Brody Diet Coke commercials either. It's a freaking soda. It's not fun, it doesn't make your car bounce, it doesn't make little bouncing bubbles appear, it's a soda. [Matt Foley, inspirational speaker] La-di-freakin-da! [/Matt Foley]

I really don't like the old Mazda commercials with the kid in the suit saying "zoom zoom." I thought that was really annoying, almost as bad as Verizon guy always saying "can you hear me now?".

The senile old coach in the ESPN Sunday NFL Countdown commercials just makes me feel uncomfortable. I don't get those commercials... the old whistle-blowing coach guy just seems crazy. A stark contrast to the college football commercials with the people trekking up the mountain to ask their question. "Can a puma challenge a lion for the throne of the jungle?"

I agree with the above people who hate the Nissan and McDonald's slogans. Man those are terrible.

I think Adidas really failed to capitalize on their Garnett/McGrady/Duncan "impossible is nothing" campaign. First of all, shouldn't that be "nothing is impossible"? Secondly, the McGrady commercial with the tiny helicopters and crap trying to slow him down... THEY'RE TINY! Is that supposed to impress me? If it was full-sized people shooting harpoons and crap at him as he drove the lane I might take it more seriously. Ugh. Besides they have probably the two best all-around players under contract (Garnett and Duncan) but McGrady gets the face time on their new spot. Brilliant.

I don't like "Red Bull gives you wings" either.

The senile old coach in the ESPN Sunday NFL Countdown commercials just makes me feel uncomfortable. I don't get those commercials... the old whistle-blowing coach guy just seems crazy. I think that guy his hilarious. I forget that actors name, but he's a old pro and he does a great job. I love the laughing drills commercial.

A stark contrast to the college football commercials with the people trekking up the mountain to ask their question. "Can a puma challenge a lion for the throne of the jungle?"Those were sheer genius, though they've since added dialog at the end of some of them basically explaining the joke for the clueless. That was really stupid.

I think Adidas really failed to capitalize on their Garnett/McGrady/Duncan "impossible is nothing" campaign. First of all, shouldn't that be "nothing is impossible"? Well, no. You don't get it? In our shoes, the impossible is nothing is what they're trying to convey.

Secondly, the McGrady commercial with the tiny helicopters and crap trying to slow him down... THEY'RE TINY! Is that supposed to impress me? If it was full-sized people shooting harpoons and crap at him as he drove the lane I might take it more seriously. Ugh.I thought it was really artistic and neat. I don't think it said much. It was just cool, like they were trying to anthromaporficize gravity.
Besides they have probably the two best all-around players under contract (Garnett and Duncan) but McGrady gets the face time on their new spot. Brilliant.Duncan's a center, Garnett's a power forward. They pound and shoot. mcgrady is the guy who slashes, drives and flies through the air. That's why they used him.

Mcdonald's "I'm lovin it" has got to be the worst of all time with me.

All cell phone commercials come in second.

Old Navy is probably the most un-original.

old navy is annoying...

mcdonalds is as bad as ever... they've ALWAYS sucked. they tried to get "edgy" with the whole mcgriddle "weird but good" thing, but just came off as weird.

some others i remember...

"we love to see you smile" (how blah can you get????"

"mcdonalds and you" (really annoying 80s-style crooning... lordy, 20 years i've had that stuck in my brain...)

it's like, damn... YOU SERVE GREASY, WELL-SALTED BEEF. WE ARE GOING TO EAT IT NO MATTER WHAT. YOU DON'T HAVE TO ANNOY US!!!!!

then there was the whole "calvin got a jobby-job" campaign... dave chappelle made fun of it better than i ever could :P

and while we're on fast food, remember 1-3 years ago, burger king did a series of f***ed up gen-x commercials that were just all sorta low-grade disgusting? sloppy dudes eating noisily and stuff. blech.

wendy's... dave "walking arterial plaque" thomas... nuff said.

taco bell... a testament to the power of good advertising. unpalatable gutbombs... and every 6 months or so, the commercial looks good and i wind up going again...

tonight was the first time i had seen the mcgrady spots. i actually thought it looked like an homage to gulliver's travels, which was kind of cool. certainly better than the retarded "king james: chamber of fear" spots, or the weird carmelo "jumpman" clips.

yes! i'm so glad i'm not the only one that thought of it.

how about these? our widgets are now only $547. Now you can take the money you saved and buy something special for yourself or whatever.

nobody walks in with $600 and finds themselves having to figure out what the do with the money they saved.

no (although i personally wasn't a fan of those), i'm talking about the new ones for this year when it's set up kind of like a video game and LeBron battles these different "demons", like "haters", and "temptation", etc.
