"Midwest" defined as.... where, exactly?
Here in Chicago, I can think of about a dozen places in the city and suburbs.
hahaha -- your username matches your inquiry!! :heh:
Jenny might live closest to you if I can remember correctly...

West of Ohio, East of Colorado. I am thinking of possible chains, and trying to stay away from Taco Bell.
I.E. Taco John's, Chipotle, QDoba

The "best" tacos I've had are not at any chain. They're all at independent shops.
Pepe's (http://www.pepes.com/) in Chicago and NW Indiana is okay as local chains go. There's another local chain called El Famous Burrito here which is questionable at best.
For the national chains, I like Chipotle (http://www.chipotle.com/) the best, although I usually get the burritos, not tacos. Second-best is Baja Fresh (http://www.bajafresh.com/).
Qdoba (http://www.qdoba.com/), to my tastebuds, is like a lower-quality version of Chipotle.
Haven't been to a Taco John's (http://www.tacojohns.com/) since one enebriated night in 1981. The ones I've been to have all been centered in college towns.

Chipotle makes freaking great burritos. not really the least bit authentic, but tasty none the less.

any little trailer parked in a parking lot where a mexican grandma and her family are serving tacos to mostly other mexicans.

Come over to my house on Thanksgiving, I'll give you the best traditional Mexican dinner. Meaning you use forks and knives and spoons not napkins and squeeze bottles.

Oh yeah, they do! There was one place in Garden City, where we lived before, that had 1. Almost always saw at least one customer there ordering. lol Was odd to see it going down the road sometimes.

They have those in the midwest?
Yup. You can even find them in some Chicago neighborhoods, set up in vacant lots.

Honestly, learn to make them yourself. Once you get past making a salsa and Guac' cooking thin strips of steak at a high heat is child's play.
Taco's are like the hot dogs of Mexican food, they're easy to make and everyone eats them differently. So they're always best when you get them just the way you want them. Plus they're ten times cheaper to make yourself than buy on the street.

Why bother with LA when you can goto TJ and get some good carnitas tacos, carne asada tacos, a side of ceviche and quesadillas.

Only if you specifically ask for dog or maybe cats if that's your pleasure, but Koreans like them their dogs but not cats, too damn stringy.
