I just got ahold of 16x 450Gb WD's that spin at 10,000 RPM, and by "got ahold" I mean, they've been lent to me at work to test lol
WOW! is all I have to say for that, speed... and space.
has the nice 16mb cache
i'm curious how they'll play out when compared to a similar sized scuzzie :P
but hey.. if they turn out to have decent reliability, they seagates may in fact not be such a flop, as ~400gb is a decent size when raid'ing for file storage.. well, I think so at least

Currently, the largest 10k drive on the market, that is even ANNOUNCED is the Seagate 10k 300GB 10k.7 drive, which I have right now and am reviewing. There are barely any other manufacturers that have 10k 300GB drives out, let alone a 10k 450GB drive.


So, how does WD, a manufacturer that has been on the backside of HDD technology for the past 2 years go from having 76GB 10k SATA drives to leaping to 450GB SATA drives when NOBODY else can do it?


Thats why I say you are full of BS. Please, if you are going to make up fish stories, do it somewhere else where you don't have somebody who does reviews for HDD's and knows the industry very well.

You obviously are doing a really poor job of reviewing if you havent looked into the research programs that companies such as WD, Seagate, etc. poor thousands of experimental drives into each year.

Wow, thats just the type of post thats bound to get thrown back in your face with a bunch of mud. Just because YOU don't know about it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. And is it such a stretch that a person MIGHT work for WD and be testing one of their drives that isn't in production?

Lets put it this way, I worked at Seagate. I talk weekly with R&D people there. Sure, he *might* have gotten 450GB 10K drives, but their release time is at least 2-3 years out in a non-SCSI format. Considering that SCSI 10k drives JUST hit 300GB in this last release, which took 2 years from the 10k.6 and WD is only at 74GB, I'd say that it will take WD at least 4 years to release a 450GB SATA consumer 10k drive in the 3.5" format.

I'll contact my WD person next week.


Of course, he could put all of this to rest by posting pics. However, I am sure that would put his company in risk of losing the ability to get such advanced tech, although telling us about it violates NDA's I am sure. Its not like WD wants their advanced un-released and VERY immature tech to get widespread release yet.
