hi. havent posted in a while. i need to build a budget computer. wondering if i could get some help on what parts to buy. hoping to spend around 3-400. i saw the dell deal on the deals page but was hoping i could build one cheaper. i'd probably have to go with amd and perhaps a reliable motherboard with onboard video. any input will help. thanks.

$138

Total: $415. Not too bad actually.

You could get a cheaper video card if you want, or use the extra money for more RAM, or a bigger hard drive. I was just going for a good all around box.

Honestly, for the money, you can't really build a better one cheaper than what Dell is offering...

Unfortunately, "good parts" are pretty expensive unless you buy in lots of 1000...

Don't wait. This is the best time to buy a computer. Dell (and others) hope you'll buy early, so Christmas shoppers won't buy at the last minute in the brick and mortor stores.

Dell is the way to go. It's unfortunate that they are tied in with intel.
They've been having some good deals with systems and LCD's lately. So if you need a monitor, you can't beat dell.

What will you use your computer mostly for? Do you have a case, etc. already?

If you still want to build a system, prices should drop quickly in the new year on the old AMD 64's. Agp based AMD 754 nforce boards and 2800+ or a 3100 sempron should oc well and make a nice doom machine.

Passes it on to dell since they are the ones who are hating on superior technology. :wow:

Just don't get the Dimension 3000 if you want to game. It doesn't have an AGP port.

thanks for all your help. if i decide to build, its gonna be from scratch. my mom just started learning how to use the computer but the one she's using right now is really bad. celeron 300 with 128mb and 8gb hdd. i just wanted to build her a basic reliable computer that she could use for a couple years. i'm sure she doesnt need anything much better then that but i was just figuring might as well get something that'll last. thanks again.

Dell PowerEdge SC420 (http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=04&kc=6W300&l=en&oc=sc420&s=bsd) is the way to go... you'll need to buy an OS for it as well, but they can go as low as $249 if you keep your eye on them.

$399 today with a free processor upgrade, but they'll probably drop the price before the end of the week.

The 4700 or 8400 don't have AGP port either because they come with PCIe only. ;)

BTW he wants a budget system so the 2400 or 3000 is perfect. I would spend extra to get the 4700 with the 17" LCD on deals page though.
