was watching "the missing" last night, which i think is a stunning movie, in that it shows how little regard humans tend to have for lives of other humans when stuck in less-than-opulent surroundings. it did an excellent job of showing how much life SUCKS on the fringes of civilization. people will kill you for your boots...

anyway. so i was wondering - have you ever thrown a punch? if so, only as a child, or as an adult? i'm going to bet that most people here haven't. i held a kid down in a chokehold once and pulled his hair til he cried because he hit my little sister... and that's it. never thrown a punch (outside of consensual martial arts practice) in my life.

how different our lives would have been 100 years ago or more... we can now afford to be civil to each other if we choose.

anyway. it was one of those movies that made me grateful for feminism, wealth, healthcare, and laws that get enforced pretty well... civilization in general.

leading me to another thought... people get up in arms about violence on tv giving our kids anxiety problems.

okay. 150 years ago, our kids would have attended public hangings, watched mommy die in childbirth, watched siblings die of pneumonia, etc...

don't try to tell me they had fewer anxiety problems.

they didn't have traffic, email, phones ringing, the deadlines we endure, insurance problems, divorce, etc. either.

of course to your point, they could die of a hangnail.

yeah...i've fought before. twice. once in gym w/a guy that was hitting on my girl. and once in my neighborhood with a big fat bully. we said we were boxing but we were really just fighting. i beat his ace DOWN. he was big but slow. he didn't pick on me anymore.

ive done locker boxing. in hockey this is where both members in the fight agree to the fight. you wear your helmet and gloves and the first to break or take of the others helmet wins.

I have had my share of fights as a kid. Once as the aggressor, and many times in self defence. Won more fights than I lost.

As an adult I have also thrown my share of punches. Mind you it was infront of my Sensei in a controlled situation.

I punched my dad when I was about 13 cus he asked me to fight him. He then knocked the bejeezus out of me.

I punched my friends...one in the eye and the other in the jaw, for standing me up 2 days in a row. One of the guys had a metal pipe in his hand, and i was still chasing him around because I was so pissed off.

These 2 incidents were somewhat related. I was abused by my dad as a kid, so I ended up taking it out on my friends that day.

i can't exactly remember. i think i probably hit my brother at various points as a child, and i might have hit a person or two in school when i was a kid. but i haven't punched anyone in years.

I'm only counting punches launched in anger here. I've done a LOT of play fighting and boxing with my brothers and neighborhood friends growing up, and sometimes things happen in the mosh pit and stuff :halo:

I've punched each of my brothers once or twice in "real" fights growing up. As early as 4, as late as 16 or 17.

I punched out a drunken cowboy hick tourist once about 10 years ago outside the French Quarter because he simply HAD to "kick my Yankee ass" and wouldn't accept no for an answer. That was on St. Patrick's Day. He was with his girlfriend, too. I still don't know what his problem was, or how anyone could be so stupid as to pick fights when they're with their girl.

Since then, I've limited my punching to sturdy inanimate objects like walls, mattresses, tables, punching bags, etc.

Yep, last time was in college when I threatened to kill the guy during the fight. I wasnt the aggressor and tried to diffuse the situation but I wasnt about to stand there and let the guy hit me without responding.

I have been in probably 7 or more true fights, never lost...never bloodied and never started any of them.

Does slug bug count?

AHHAHAHAHAHA :heh:

lord, i'd forgotten all about that game. it was great, in my hometown we'd all be playing in a reasonably civilized fashion until we approached the "slugbug graveyard" ... a mechanic's place with no fewer than 17 bugs perpetually littering the driveway... man did the competition get fierce then, everyone punching and shouting as fast as possible to get the sweet loot of slugbug points FIRST...

dumb car games are AWESOME!!!

now i'm remembering more, like corners (when you turn a corner, you lean into the turn as hard as possible to smash the others in the backseat with you... it's like an amorphous, neverending armwrestling match...)

and padiddle! that one was awesome, cruising in the dark in high school, you get the point for being the first person to yell padiddle while punching the roof of the car for seeing a car with only one functional headlight... there was an art to doing it, if you jump the gun and punched you might eff it up and call a motorcycle... the punishment for which was the first person to call you on it gets to punch YOU and take your point...

wow. it's the little things, isn't it? :D

I haven't had to throw a punch in 10 years or so. I had several "altercations" in high school and college and once got into a knock-down, drag-out fistfight when I was 17 and I while I "won", I really didn't win and I still feel bad about it because it didn't have to escalate to that.

Ever since I started learning Judo, I have usually been able to talk my way out of situations with a very confident demeanor that convinced the other party (or parties) to leave without anything happening. The people that most of the time don't listen to reason are drunks, and I have had to deal with my fair share of those. Judo takes care of them well and they usually get the newsflash in 1.3 seconds ( a little longer than normal since they aren't thinking straight) that I know a bit more than they do and they should just get away riki-tik.

I never did. Many times that I wanted to. I think I would get a lil psycho and would throw away my life just to kill the guy and make sure his family suffers. So I guess I'm lucky I never had to encounter such a situation.

I came close once in a club where the girl I was with was too drunk to know what she was doing. She signaled me for help and I elbowed him in the gut and then it was on like Donkey Kong!!! Fortunately, my bark was worse than my bite b/c he would have whooped me I think. I didn't get any...just a kiss on the cheek I think. Oh well.

only fight i've ever been in/only punches i ever threw was in 4th grade when a kid wouldn't stop making fun of my name. i chased his arse down after school, and just let "thunder and lightning" loose...he went into a fetal position and took it, until he caught my arm and bit me.

7th grade outside the boys locker room. I won that one in 2 punches.

11th grade outside of Taco Bell. I was drunk and so was my friend. We fought because, "Hey, why not?" It was really intelligent as you can tell. In my mind I won, but in reality it was a draw. I started it because I couldn't handle my liquor back then.

I went into retirement with an undefeated but arguable 2-0 record (some might say 1-0-1).

I was going to say no, but in high school my friends and I used to punch each other in the arm on birthdays. Never in a fight, though I'm always ready to throw down if a situation arises where it would be necessary (standing up for friends or family).

i have, but most of them were in like 7th or 8th grade in the 'bathroom brawls' we'd have. we were all friends, but there was this one guy i really disliked and he disliked me. so we always went head to head during those. i always got him good tho.

and once probably 2 years ago while i was wasted. i swung at one of the guys in our group, he was sober, and a few feet away so i totally missed. i was then tackled by another guy to the ground and held there for a bit. hehe.

other than that its just been altercations where push never got to punch, either by being split up by other people or the teacher.

Yes but not since college. I have a friend who liked to start fights that I'd wind up becoming involved in. He could always take care of himself but had a tendency to start things with groups.

haha....6th grade gym class. a few punches then we were all tangled up. teacher came over and broke it up. he didn't say much. he was awesome. he of course was the health teacher as well. i remember some of the stuff he taught us and laugh cuz he didn't know wtf he was talking about. but i'm sure he was a good football coach or something.

Yes, twice (not counting goofing around.) Once when I was 14 and once when I was 19. Both times the recipient of the punch totally did not deserve it, and just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. BTW, the punches I received back were MUCH worse than the punch I threw, but I knew I deserved it.

Oh yeah, the guy I punched when I was 19 was my best friend and college roommate.

My last fight was in 6th grade. It was more a establishing the pecking order/alpha male thing with the kids in our neighborhood than a fight to the death. But that said, I'm still proud I won. hehe.
