View Full Version : My processor didn't come with heatsink paste: should I say what the hell?

I just got a nice little p4 Titan motherboard with 3.0 ghz processor. I was putting it together and I noticed that there is no heatsink paste. Is this some new technology I have never heard of? I haven't put one together in a while so I'm not sure if things have changed or not. The bottom of the heatsink/fan which came with the processor looks like it has some prepasted coating on it. Is it possible that I don't need the paste, if the package didn't include it?
Thanks!

The HSF probably comes with thermal pad so you don't need thermal paste.

Holy crap bachviet you are right. The instructions says "place the fan heatsink onto the motherobard, alighning the fasteners through the holes (Be careful not to damage the thermal interface attached to the bottom of the heatsink)."
Who knew instructions actually had useful information?! Thanks Bach!

As long as you're not overclocking, that thermal pad should be just fine.

Well, you could also scrape off that pad and add some "Arctic Silver" to it... like I do. But like has been previously said, if you ain't overclockin' it... "why bother". :D

scraping that gunk off is the worst PC maintaining chore. especially if you're applying arctic silver, which requires 99.9% of all the gunk removed to be effective. scraping a heatsink all day is not worth my time, and i would just buy another heatsink before subjecting myself to dealing with thermal paste.

I've done it before... with a little rubbing alchohol and a clean lint free rag...
Some folks don't wanna spend another $15 or so on a separate heatsink... when the stock cooler works fine (at least they did with the old P3s and P4s) :D
