Quick digital media question

I was getting my mother a secure digital card for her camera for Xmas. My dad ended up picking it up and the guy at the store said, well are you sure this type of sd card will fit? And my dad was confused and so was i beacuse i thought there was only one type/size of SD digital media. Its about the size of a postage stamp, but the salesman made my dad think there were different sizes. So is there just one size or are there multiple? I looked around and only saw sd.

well there is xSD right? Half the size of SD. I get confused on SD and MMC. They shouldn't be the same physical size but I think I see it used as compatible in mobile phones.
