I have a nVidia 6800 in my top notch Athlon64 system. I can play Doom 3 for hours or any other high end game. Half Life is the only one that will lock it up after 15 minites of play. When it locks up the sound is stuck at what ever it was last doing and everything is just frozen. Its not the CPU or MB overheating since I have logging for that. The voltages look just fine so I assume it has to be the video card. The nVidia utility that shows the GPU temp shows it as 60C while just in windows. I need a GPU logging utlity so I can see what it gets up to in the game. The CPU gets up to 141F max, but drops down the second it slows down. The Power supply is the only other thing I am worried about. Its an Antec 380W and it will climb to 130F according to the sensor in it.

Stupid question, but do you have the latest video drivers? I think I read somewhere there was a driver written specifically for HL2...

Those temperatures seem a little on the high side. Anything above 55C (131F) is definitely a heat issue now-a-days. Open up that case and get it cooled down and see if it locks up again. Cooler is always better!

Heat issue imo. Open case and/or add a fan to blow cool air on the cpu/gpu.

What res is you monitor at? Lower and test.

I had my first lockup playing CS:S today... had to reboot.

I run CS:S at 1024x768. It doesn't even max out my system. I run Doom 3 at a higher res and I run Half Life 2 at a higher res than that. I think its just cause CS:S sucks. Lots of people have been having lockup issues I have found out.

I just read this at AT. The issue was thought to be sound related, but now people are saying it's the auto save function. Hopefully someone will quickly figure out how to disable it.

Just so we cover the un-obvious solutions, I have had a similar problem where the freeze occurs, sound locks, etc. and it turned out to be a problem with drivers for card which somehow made temps on the board rise up.(i.e. the mem on the card, as well as the system memory)..
2 solutions that worked with about the same change in performance:

1. Check the system memory, make sure it isnt overheating. I lowered some speed settings down 1 notch, and it resolved the issue w/out having to change anything else. (however, this also effects performance too..)
2. I found that reverting to an older more stable graphics card driver or possibly in your case finding a newer-more stable driver solved the problem as well. I was able to keep the system memory at it's original speed, but due to driver changing, I lost a little bit of performance on that end.

Hope this may be of some insight/help.
