what's better... the 8400 or the 4700? and why?

8400 will start with higher upgrade options and such... See my offer on the "for sale" board to buy a 4700 for even less.
I'd personally suggest the 8400.
You get a better motherboard (925x vs 915G), better expandability (3 PCI slots vs 2), better standard video (Radeon x300 SE 128MB PCI x16 vs integrated Intel 900 chip), dedicated memory (instead of shared with video chip), bigger case (more storage), and clamshell case (quieter).
It also starts with faster 3.2Ghz P4 vs 3.0Ghz P4.

Case and mobo is better, but that X300 has a bad rep on the net so far and will need to be replaced if you plan on gaming.

Remember to pick up 512MB more of RAM to add to it. A paltry 128MB included with the system will be the bottleneck of your system as soon as you install any program after Windows.

The X300SE is the slowest PCIExpress video card from ATI. I had heard somewhere else that there may be some problems with there not being enough room in the case to put in a different video card? Anyone know anything about that? If so, that would make upgrading the video card more difficult. Otherwise, put in an NVidea 6600GT.

The GF 6600GT is the leader of mid range video card right now. I wish that the AGP version is as cheap as the PCIe so I could get one.
BTW the 8400 is better (same reasons as Apex listed).
The X300 SE is not great, but the output is clean, and you have DVI as well. You can upgrade to a different card aftermarket. There's enough room in the 8400 case for a huge video card.

X600 256MB for $107 or so is not too shabby.
Oh yeah, forgot. The 8400 has 10/100/1000 networking vs 10/100 for the 4700. Another bonus.

Please, do not post referrals in the deals forum. This is your final chance.

Looks like they are up'ing the ante....not by much, but hey take what you can get.
On the 8400 "Customize It" page, there is a link that says "FREE CD Burner with ANY Dimension Desktop". Does not appear on the 4700 page, or in the CD drive options list for either 4700 or 8400 though. And on the main Outrageous Deals page, the 3000 models are showing that deal, but the 4700 and 8400 are not.
So maybe they have not fully updated yet? I didn't notice if that CD Burner deal was there yesterday.
Maybe calling in your order would be best in this case, so you can work them for the free CD Burner.
