Gents,

Got into a heated discussion with some guy in my office today. We were talking about the problem I had when running with my (wife's) iPod last week, and the fact that it froze up on me. He said I should get a Mini to run with because they only use flash. I informed him that he was wrong, that it was still a hard drive based player, just using a 1" drive instead of the larger hard drive in the regular pod.

He then kept on babbling on about it being a flash drive. Now at this point I was fairly certain he was wrong, and allied to the fact that he is a Red Sox fan I was ready to put his scrawny 145lb body through a wall. However I didn't think that the nice people in my HR department would like this too much, and the building maintenance people dislike replastering walls after system analysts have been pulled out of them, so I decided not to cause him serious bodily harm.

So to help me conclude a discussion, and to save Jeff from serious bodily harm, please can one of you expert types out there please explain the drive set up of an iPod mini for me, and I'll then relate this to him, hopefully using a method that does not involve him needing to pick up his teeth from the floor.

Thanks guys.

Biffer

Ah Ha! So am I to take it that once again The Biffer is correct, and with this information I shall stride confidently down the corridor, up the stairs and over to his desk! After berating him at length for his obvious lack of technical knowledge, and them further for having the temerity to question my (obviously) superior knowledge, I shall then complete the humiliation for him by removing his poster of Fenway Park from his cubicle wall, rolling it into a tube, and using it as a funnel for me to urinate into his trashcan. I will then remove his shoes, and trumphantly drop them into the now liquid filled trashcan, and march back to my desk, safe in the knowledge that I and I alone can be known as the man with the plan, and no other little scrote will dare doubt me again.

Or would that be considered a little extreme?

Maybe you should ask him to find you a 4gb flash card to replace it?

I don't think they make such a thing.

If anyone else needs to attend the recently formed Got Apex Anger Management counselling group, I'll be there shortly, apparently along with Gear02 who seems keen to encourage me into violent acts.....

Another thing:

My GF's iPod mini freezes up on a regular basis. So your buddy's wrong on two counts: a mini isn't flash-based and it won't solve the problem anyway 'cause minis freeze too.

From Apple's support web page (http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/tutorial/t12b.html):

If your iPod freezes, press and hold the Menu and Select buttons until the Apple logo appears. You should have to hold the buttons down for about 6 to 10 seconds.

See, I thought those were Microdrives (the 2GB, 4GB, etc.) ... the largest flash I knew of was a year ago at 1GB, but I guess they advanced

Awesome deal! I guess I buy 2 iPod Minis and sell the 4gig cards for a deal!

I'm sure it's been discussed before... just for the sake of argument.

Actually, they have 8GB flash cards available - they're a little expensive, tho:

A little expensive? At those prices that is akin to saying that Barry Bonds is "a little bit juiced up on steroids".

If the guy's a Red Sox fan, then no need to hold back for the shoving. He's wrong anyway. As it's been proven already, Microdrives are hard drives in a CF packaging.
