Laptop Tethering

Just got my first laptop and am interested in basic tethering (checking email, news sites, etc) when I travel away from home (about once a month in southest and southwest U.S. area).

What do you consider to be the best plan for my tethering needs?

Can you be more specific? Is this for personal or business use? Do you want dial up, wifi, cell access, or a combo? What's your budget?
