View Full Version : SS: I am in a lot of trouble

Okay, so I woke up early and bought a ticket to the Sugar Bowl, then posted it for sale on my personal 30MB webspace on my school's server. I forgot that you can't use the server to sell anything, so I took down the site, and there's an apology there now:

http://filebox.vt.edu/users/kedooley/sugarbowl/

People over at this 3rd party site are getting enraged at my whole selling this ticket (although many people are selling them.. GAH!)

http://www.techsideline.com/message_board/football/2004/December/9/1640761.html

Somebody has already spammed me with 50 website registrations for www.whatcounts.com ( I have no idea what that is ) and they have access to my personal information like my address through my school's people finder. I am thinking about having the police or registrar hide my info (http://www.computing.vt.edu/accounts_and_access/confidentiality.html#students).

Here's the thing... I took down the site I had before, so do you think I'm in outstanding trouble still? Like if I go to the university registrar or police, I'm not incriminating myself with anything?

Absolutely call and get your info removed from your address book thing. Also, contact that website and have them remove your name from the site.

Then, wait a week. Nobody will remember or care after a week.

I'm not saying I agree with what you did, but these people are the typical nuts you find when people get upset.

Wow, you sure touched a nerve.

I really think the big problem is that you don't seem to see the true infraction. You seem to think ticket scalping is ok. It's like you think the big problem was using VT web space to sell something. As if what you have done is no worse than using your VT web space to sell some CDs or books.

I don't think you can do anything except lay low and hope this passes over soon.

I hope everyone forgets by Monday.

People were selling FREE student tickets for $40 and no one complained. They should have. I agree that people should have complained about me because I shouldn't have scalped it (thus learning my lesson), but they should not take extra effort to do permanent damage.

Thanks for your advice.

It's getting worse at that website. I have called the county Sherriff and they're going to get back to me.

Is there anyway to get the webmaster of techsideline.com to take down their forum until their members cool off? can I have the police call him and request that the forum be taken down since my personal info is there and people are encouraging others to harrass me?

I'd say it one person that's really a dork AbsolutHokie04.

I suppose if you wanted to mess with him you could say someone damaged your home and car and now you're gonna sue him :P

I requested the webmaster [email protected] to completely take down both threads... we'll see if he does it. I don't think I'd ever sue anyone, but with this much harrassment over a freaking football ticket, what can you do? I have a final tomorrow, my hardest one, and my heart is pumping because of all of these people.

First off, depending on the state, selling a ticket for more than face may actually be completely LEGAL. I dont know the rule but a quick search turned up this tidbit:

http://www.ncsl.org/programs/lis/ticketscalplaws.htm

Between the information contained in the paragraph and the graph itself, I would say that the legality of selling the ticket is going to depend on local ordinances in your area.

Furthermore, many locations dont consider it to be scalping if you are selling the ticket away from the venue and prior to the game, because that is a free market situation and not the typical "got him by the short-hairs analogy" that is used to show why people are willing to pay 10X+ face value of the ticket.

Secondly, I dont know why these people all went up in arms over you selling your ticket. Does the school prohibit it? Is it in the student ticket contract you signed pre-season to get your student tickets? Is it just a general indignation that a student would rather turn a profit than see the game? Or is it a sour grapes mentality since they couldnt get a seat and you did, only to turn around and sell it?

Finally, I personally would remove the apology...that is noting that you in fact did something wrong. (I couldnt see it since it required a login to even view the site) Common sense dictates that you just delete the offending material and pretend it never happened. If someone comes to your site and sees nothing, then it no longer has any appeal. Compare that to someone who is all fired up and then gets there to see an apology...its throwing gas on a fire.

:stupid: In some places it's only scalping if you sell the ticket on arena grounds.

It is legal in Virginia, since the venue is in Lousiana. According to all of the auctions on eBay, if you are buying in Louisiana, you cannot sell for over twice the value. I'm actually not even selling the physical ticket -- I'm selling the right to get one. People going in groups have to get tickets at the same time to get adjacent seats, so I'm really acting as "their friend" for the getting tickets part, then they give me the sale price and they get to keep to ticket. But it doesn't matter... it's still legal if it were a ticket in my hands.

They were pissed because I would rather turn it into a profit than let a student have the ticket. Some guy tried telling me that I'm screwing everyone over in future years because they're going to alot less and less tickets for us because of people selling them like me. They didn't understand that I was selling it to another VT student, so as far as I'm concerned, there are no repercussions -- 3000 VT students are still going to be at the game, I'm not selling to the general public.

I removed it earlier and put up a password protect on my site. Only VT students can view it, and since I took that sub-site down, they can only see my front page, which has nothing of interest on it.

:thumb:

All of these people can eat me, but I just don't like that they are encouraging people to sign up for spam with my school e-mail address. If the site admin over there doesn't comply with my request, I'll be seeking advice on how to MAKE him.

Thanks for the responses... I'm still up studying (6am EST) for my 1pm final, and I've been able to cool off and focus :)

You should send that email to the president of the company, saying this is how one of his employees acts.

It's his prerogative to send hate mail to you, but not from his company email account. He's a dumbass and he should be fired for that.

I might send him an email with that list of names and politely ask for an apology, lest I show his superiors how he uses the company's mailing system.

I would in a heartbeat. I would write it something like this:

Dear Mr. Shaw,

I was very surprised to receive your threatening and angry email message in my personal email box. Since you used your company's email system to send me this message, I can only guess that it is probably a flagrant violation of your company's communications policy for you to send such a message. Due to the threatening manner of your communication, I initially thought of pursuing a legal solution with the local county sherriff about this manner. Instead, I decided to have your company recognize the situation you have put them in. In an effort to resolve this, I have forwarded your email message to the following individuals in your company:

---------------------------------------------------
You may want to add this as a P.S. :

I can unsend the message as it has not left the university email system yet. If you wish to apologize, please do so on the following forum...

I think something like that should cause him to start sweating bullets, what do you think?

Okay, I have it written, but right now I'm just warning him that I plan to forward a copy of his original e-mail to his superiors. I dont' want to risk it by putting in guesses at the exec's email addresses (he could call my bluff). How can I end it? He probably knows enough that if he's getting this message, it's not still on the school server...

I want to send this out for him to read on Monday morning in the office :D

I find nothing morally wrong with scalping tickets in any situation. Whats the difference between buying an item at a deep discount during some sale and reselling for retail price on ebay to scalping? Not much. Its supply and demand to me. If someone is willing to pay they will, if not they won't. I don't see why event tickets are this holy grail that is for some reason supposed to be immune from the laws of the universe.

I think it's because event tickets are a limited supply AND are time sensitive. It's possible that someone could buy all the tickets and then start gouging (sp?) people.

But mostly I think it's to prevent others from charging exorbitant prices so the companies could do it. The Chicago cubs had a little outfit that they gave most of their walk up tickets to and they sold them at much higher prices. I'm sure there are many examples.

Besides, I like those states that have laws preventing tickets to be sold at above face value.

I sent an email to "Chris Shaw" but never heard back from him. Hopefully he learned his lesson.

The spam keeps coming in though, but it shows how moronic these people are, since everything they send me has a "Click here to Unsubscribe" link. They're doing more work themselves by finding sites and typing in my email address. I hope Darwin gets them soon.
