Need Scanner, Looking for a good price

I am looking for a scanner and I found one. It's the Canon 'CanoScan' FB 620U Scanner (USB) and I can get it for $39.95. I have heard from a few people that this scanner scan real dark but just read a review at ZDTV and they said with a patch that is fixable.

Could someone tell me if there is a better scanner value out there? Not looking for anything specific. Can be parell port, USB or even SCSI.
