ray's answer actually makes good sense. It is valid for every example you give and you have not given an example that disproves his answer...
So i say ray wins. :bandit:

I think IN is right.
ONE = 3 (letters)
FOUR = 4
FIVE = 5
EVERYTHING = 10
Here's an easy one:
Poor people have it.
Rich people need it.
If you eat it, you'll die.

I just thought ray was just being silly. I now see he had the right answer and was simply being clever.
DAVID: It's such a fine line between stupid an'...
DEREK: ...and clever.
DAVID: Yeah, and clever.
Here's an easy one:
Poor people have it.
Rich people need it.
If you eat it, you'll die.
I believe the full riddle is:
What is Greater than God,
More evil than the Devil,
Rich people need it,
Poor people have it,
if you eat it you will die?

i heard it on a radio station. it took a lot of callers before someone figured it out.
i think ray had it figured right away, but he didn't explain it explicitly.

if
1 = 5
2 = 25
3 = 125

Looks again like ray has it right. The numbers match the powers of 5.
5^1 = 5
5^2 = 25
5^3 = 125
5^4 = 625
5^5 = 3125
If he's got it wrong, I'd really like to see the right answer.

3 = 125
4 = 625
5 = 1 (read first line)

Okay another chance for everyone.
Will had a deep, dark-sided jar. The jar contained 30 jelly beans in 5 colors, an equal number of each color. Will could only reach one jelly bean at a time. How many jelly beans would he have to pull out before he was sure he got two of the same color?

why not 2?
The probability of pulling one out of the jar for color A is 1/5=.2
the probability of pulling one out of the jar for color A again, is (1/5)(5/29)~0.0344827586207

well, the original question asked "until he was sure." you can't guarantee you'd get two of the same color after pulling out 2 jelly beans. after 6 though, it would be sure.

how about pulling one out, then pulling another one out, then putting that one in if its not the same, then repeating until u get the same?

how about pulling one out, then pulling another one out, then putting that one in if its not the same, then repeating until u get the same?
because that could take even more tries than 6. the key is getting the least number of tries where you can guarantee that you will get two of the same. its not that complicated of a problem.
