i need to send ~20 gigs of data to florida. aside from burning it to dvd, what's the best way? i'd like to connect directly to the computer it's going to and let it rip. . .

Who's on the other end? Is it someone on an open internet connection or behind a firewall at an office? What kind of connection do each of you have?

You're going to be limited to your upload speed (256 kbit on Comcast Broadband here, you'll do better on a T1 or something faster if you have it in your office), and of course your recipient will be limited by his download speed.

I once sent a few hundred megabytes of data though the file transfer mechanism built into AIM. We both had cable modems. It took several hours and bombed out at least once.

I'd vote for DVDs, or if you have an old 20+ GB hard drive lying around, load it up to that and ship it.

FTP would be the fastest way. Even on a cable upload it would only take a few days. Just have them set up an FTP server and you upload it using FlashFXP and it won't be any trouble, just time.

20GB Hard drive through the mail? :D

You could use Direct Connect++ (http://sourceforge.net/projects/dcplusplus/), but Canta's suggestion of FTP would probably be the easiest.

If you do have to do it by ftp or something, i might recommend making 1 gb folders so that if something does bomb out, you dont have to start all over or hunt through to see where things went bad... or mail them 5 dvds... i think that will take about the same amount of time.

FTP, make sure when you are uploading that you are using a client that supports uploading resumes (www.ftpvoyager.com). Same for downloads.. use a client that supports auto-resume and you won't have any problems, it will just be slow.

How about floppy disks? You would only need about 13,500 of them, and imagine the fun you would have loading all of the data onto all of those!!!

I would burn to DVD and FedEX them down there. It will be much cheaper and quicker by the time you figure out how to transfer the files.

Or you could print all of the data out, and fax it down there. Then the guy on the other end could take that and type it into his computer.

What if you just ran a really long CAT5 cable from here to there?

Setup a WiFi with a few pringles cans? Use 50 gallon garbage cans with tin foil on the inside of them instead. Just dont stand in front of them you might fry...

he probably decided to slit his wrists with those DVDs instead of listening to all of the dumbass suggestions that started coming out of this thread.

How about morse code? You could translate all fo the data into that, and send it down to him. ...----.. -. -.. --- ... - .- ..-.

Or you could call him on the electric telephone and describe each line of code to him...

Brilliant!
