View Full Version : Looking for a new cordless phone

Well the time has come for me to look into a new cordless phone (my el-cheapo Sanyo 900MHz phone barely holds a charge even with a new battery).
I do have a few requirements:
1) The phone cannot be a 2.4GHz model. I have a wireless LAN, and don't want any interference. If the 5.8GHz models are good, I'd definately consider one of them.
2) The option to have a second handset would be handy, since my brother wouldn't mind a good cordless as well.
3) Phone must have caller ID.
4) If possible, a phone with either a battery meter, or one that alerts you to a low battery even when you aren't making a call would be ideal. My current Sanyo only gives its low battery alert during a call, and it's very annoying.
Any recommendations from you guys would be very helpful.

I can't recommend a specific model, but I've been very happy with the Uniden cordless phones. I know the Costco by me sometimes has them.

my parents have a Uniden cordless phone with 3 handsets and caller ID. come to think of it, they probably bought it at Costco. I think this is the one they have but theirs is gray and black.

Funny, I was actually considering Uniden too, since our local Costco store carries them. :)
Guess I knew more than I thought I did -- or something like that. :D

So you guys think that Uniden is a good phone? I was at Costco today and almost bought one. I hate my current phone because the volume of the person speaking on the other end is way too low, and the ringer sounds like crap. Oh yeah and the clarity drops when you are 20 feet away. OTher than that, it's great.

I have the Uniden 3 headset phone. It's great cause the phones work with each other in so many ways. You can monitor a room remotely, each has a speakerphone, transfer phone numbers from one to the other, and intercom system. Much more. I likes it

Although I swore I wouldnt, I bought another Panasonic. Its a 5.8ghz, KXTG5050w. The first one that I received was defective and I returned it...the new one has been nothing but wonderful. Crystal clear sound and thus far no interference.
I got mine for $18 during an Office Depot anniversary sale. That said, I have seen them generally from $40 - $70 at the various stores.
This model has a speakerphone built into the handset, but does not dial from the base nor have a speakerphone in the base. It also is independent and not one of those add-on units.
Just FYI: My old 2.4 ghz phone (a first gen) did have interference with one of our wifi systems, but all of the newer 2.4 ghz phones that we had did not have the same problem. So simply being in the same region of the spectrum is not necessarily going to mean you have interference.
VTech's and Unidens have both been rated well in the past, but many people complain about the size of the new phones, the sound of the phone (tinny), and other personal reasons for disliking them.
Good luck on the phone hunt.

I bought one of the Uniden 2.4 GHz phone sets (base and extra handset) about three years ago. It works okay in my condo, although it does whack my wireless net sometimes.
To get rid of the interference problem, I bought the 5.8 GHz Uniden set at Costco (updated version of what I already had). It was terrible. The interference with my WiFi stopped, but the signal reach was awful. I put the old system back in place and everything was fine again, WiFi-whacking notwithstanding.
Just my experience; ymmv.

I love my panasonic. I have the 2.4 ghz (which i know that you can't use) but i have heard great things about the 5.8. Their model with the expandable hand sets is the one that i went with and love it. I can have a handset in every room and one even doubles as an alarm clock. In my opinion they are the best cordless phone out there.

I got it.. however it is a Christmas gift for DFJ's momma... and it hasn't been opened yet.
But I've had Panasonic phones before, and they've always been of good quality. :thumb:
