If you just plan to shoot video and want to store it on DVD, then such a camcorder should work fine.
If you plan to edit this however, than I'd suggest going with a MiniDV camcorder instead. Editing MPEG-2 video (or whatever it uses) is a pain, and if I recall correctly, most editing software won't even let you do it. You'd be limited to Sony's recording software that they give you, and if it's anything like other Sony software products, I'd stay away from it.

I have this (http://www.epinions.com/pr-Canon_Optura_20_Mini_DV_Camcorder) Canon DV recorder.
I can download the video clips to my PC and manipulate them with no problem.
I've had some bad experiences with Sony products so I generally steer away from them.

Sony's not too bad. I guess feature-wise they're one of the best as they've been doing this for a very long time but you'll definitely pay for the name.
